Thermodynamic Properties of a q-Boson Gas Trapped in an n-Dimensional Harmonic Potential

Abstract

The thermodynamic properties of an ideal q-boson gas trapped in an n-dimensional harmonic potential are studied, based on the distribution function of q-bosons. The critical temperature Tc,q of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and the heat capacity C of the system are derived analytically. It is shown that for the q-boson gas trapped in a harmonic potential, BEC may occur in any dimension when q ≠ 1, the critical temperature is always higher than that of an ordinary Bose gas (q = 1), and the heat capacity is continuous at Tc,q for a one-dimensional system but discontinuous at Tc,q for a two- or multi-dimensional system.

Exact thermodynamic theory of an ideal boson gas in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

Ze Cheng

We employ the q-digamma function to calculate the internal energy E, the entropy S, the Helmholtz free energy F, and the heat capacity at constant number of ideal Bose atoms in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. The first main finding in this paper is that in a one-dimensional harmonic trap and when the temperature approaches zero, the entropy of a finite number of ideal Bose atoms is nonzero but the entropy of an infinite number of ideal Bose atoms is zero. The second main finding is that the heat capacity at constant number has a classic limit as . In the thermodynamic limit, we find that at critical temperature the heat capacity at constant number is discontinuous. Hence, at there is a jump in the heat capacity and this jump is calculated. Consequently, the transition between normal and condensed states is a second-order phase transition.

Bose-Einstein condensation of a trapped gas in n dimensions

Zijun Yan

The critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation, ground-state fraction, and heat capacity of an ideal gas of Bose particles that are confined by an n-dimensional generic power-law potential trap are derived. The conditions for Bose-Einstein condensation and the discontinuous conditions of the heat capacity at critical temperature are obtained. All these quantities and conditions are found to vary markedly with the dimensionality of space, characteristics of particles, and shape of the external potential. The results obtained here are universal.

Bose-Einstein condensation of an ideal Bose gas trapped in any dimension

The properties of a trapped ideal Bose gas in n -dimensional space are studied. General analytic expressions of the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation, the jump of heat capacity at and the fraction of condensation at temperatures below have been derived. How these physical quantities depend on the external potential, particle characteristics and space dimensionality are discussed. We find that when a proper external potential is taken, Bose-Einstein condensation may occur in any dimensional space.

Bose-Einstein condensation in anisotropic harmonic traps

Tor Haugset, Hårek Haugerud, Jens O. Andersen

We study the thermodynamic behavior of an ideal gas of bosons trapped in a three-dimensional anisotropic harmonic-oscillator potential. The condensate fraction as well as the specific heat is calculated using the Euler-Maclaurin approximation. For a finite number of particles there is no phase transition, but there is a well-defined temperature at which the condensation starts. We also consider condensation in lower dimensions, and, for one-dimensional systems, we discuss the dependence of the condensate fraction and heat capacity on the ensemble used.

Thermostatistical properties ofq-deformed bosons trapped in aD-dimensional power-law potential

Guozhen Su, Jincan Chen, Lixuan Chen

The thermostatistical properties of an ideal gas of q -deformed bosons trapped in a D -dimensional power-law potential are studied, based on the q -deformed Bose–Einstein distribution. The effects of q -deformation on the properties of the system are discussed. It is shown that q -deformed bosons ( q ≠ 1) possess many different characteristics from those of ordinary bosons, which include the condition that Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) occurs, the critical temperature and the continuity of heat capacity.

Thermostatistic properties of aq-generalized Bose system trapped in ann-dimensional harmonic oscillator potential

Congjie Ou, Jincan Chen

The thermostatistic properties of a q-generalized boson system trapped in an n-dimensional harmonic oscillator potential are studied, based on the generalized statistic distribution derived from Tsallis' entropy. The density of states, total number of particles, critical temperature at which Bose-Einstein condensation occurs, internal energy, and heat capacity at constant volume are derived. The characteristics of Bose-Einstein condensation of the system are discussed in detail. It is found from the results obtained here that the thermostatistic properties of such a system depend closely on parameter q, dimensional number of the space, and frequency of the harmonic oscillator; and the external potential has a great influence on the thermostatistic properties of the system.
