Quantum properties of a strongly driven Josephson junction

Jennifer Gosner, Björn Kubala, Joachim Ankerhold

A Josephson junction embedded in a dissipative circuit can be externally driven to induce nonlinear dynamics of its phase. Classically, under sufficiently strong driving and weak damping, dynamic multistability emerges, associated with dynamical bifurcations so that the often-used modeling as a Duffing oscillator, which can exhibit bistability at most, is insufficient. The present work analyzes in this regime corresponding quantum properties by mapping the problem onto a highly nonlinear quasienergy operator in a rotating frame. This allows us to identify in detail parameter regions where simplifications such as the Duffing approximation are valid, to explore classical-quantum correspondences, and to study how quantum fluctuations impact the effective junction parameters as well as the dynamics around higher-amplitude classical fixed points.

Superconducting Circuits without Inductors Based on Bistable Josephson Junctions

I. I. Soloviev, V. I. Ruzhickiy, Sergey V. Bakurskiy +5 more

Magnetic flux quantization in superconductors allows the implementation of fast and energy-efficient digital superconducting circuits. However, information representation in magnetic flux severely limits the functional density and is a long-standing problem. Here, we introduce the concept of superconducting digital circuits that do not utilize magnetic flux and have no inductors. We argue that neither the use of geometric nor kinetic inductance is promising for the scaling down of superconducting circuits. The key idea of our approach is the utilization of bistable Josephson junctions, allowing the representation of information through the Josephson energy. Since the proposed circuits are composed only of Josephson junctions, they can be called all-Josephson junction (all-JJ) circuits. We present a methodology for the design of circuits consisting of conventional and bistable junctions. We analyze the principles of the circuit's functioning, ranging from simple logic cells to an 8-bit parallel adder. The utilization of bistable junctions in the all-JJ circuits is promising for the simplification of schematics and a decrease of the JJ count, leading to space efficiency.

Bistability and nonequilibrium condensation in a driven-dissipative Josephson array: A c-field model

Matthew T. Reeves, Matthew J. Davis

Abstract Developing theoretical models for nonequilibrium quantum systems poses significant challenges. Here we develop and study a multimode model of a driven-dissipative Josephson junction chain of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, as realised in the experiment of Labouvie et al.[Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 235302 (2016)]. The model is based on c-field theory, a beyond-mean-field approach to Bose-Einstein condensates that incorporates fluctuations due to finite temperature and dissipation. We find the c-field model is capable of capturing all key features of the nonequilibrium phase diagram, including bistability and a critical slowing down in the lower branch of the bistable region. Our model is closely related to the so-called Lugiato-Lefever equation, and thus establishes new connections between nonequilibrium dynamics of ultracold atoms with nonlinear optics, exciton-polariton superfluids, and driven damped sine-Gordon systems.
