Influence of higher-order photon absorption on bistable-soliton propagation and switching

Richard H. Enns, S. S. Rangnekar

The effect of weak higher-order photon absorption on bistable-soliton propagation and switching in a fiber whose intensity-dependent refractive index is described by the linear-plus-smooth-step model is investigated numerically. The choice of model allows the application of the adiabatic assumption and a clear analytic interpretation of all of the observed results.

The possibility to control by applying external electric field the index of absorption (and correlated to it index of refraction) of low-temperature impurity media can serve, in principle, as basis for opto-electronic devices such as laser beam modulators and optical memories.

Stability analysis of nonlinear periodic media

C. Martijn de Sterke

While the analysis of the stationary solutions of nonlinear periodic media suggests the existence of gap-soliton-induced bistability, numerical simulations show that some of the states involved are unstable. To investigate the instability, a linear stability analysis is presented showing the stable and unstable regions as a function of both the intensity of the incoming radiation and the frequency.
