Motional entanglement for two trapped ions in cascaded optical cavities

Abstract

The time-dependent characteristic function for the vibrational quanta of two ions separately trapped in two cascaded optical cavities is obtained analytically beyond the bad cavity limit, in which the motional mode of the ion in the first cavity is coupled to the cavity field via an effective parametric interaction and that of the ion in the second cavity via a linear-mixing interaction as proposed by Peng and Parkins [Phys. Rev. A 65, 062323 (2002)]. It is found that the two ions develop in a two-mode mixed Gaussian entangled state if there exists a unidirectional coupling from the first cavity to the second one.

Dynamics of Entanglement for Coherent Motional States of Two Trapped Ions in Cascaded Optical Cavities

Gao‐xiang Li, Zhang Fan, Shaoping Wu

We study the generation of an entangled motional coherent state of two distant ions trapped in two cascaded cavities, in which the motional mode of the each ion is coupled to the respective cavity field via a linear-mixing interaction. The master equation is solved analytically by using the characteristic function method. It is found that the generated entangled coherent state resulted from the initial preparation of an even coherent state is more robust than that from an odd coherent state under the dissipation of the cavity.

Generation of entanglement and squeezing in the system of two ions trapped in a cavity

Gao‐xiang Li, Shao‐ping Wu, J. F. Hu

The dynamical behavior of the entanglement and the squeezing in the system of two ions trapped in a lossy optical cavity is discussed, in which the vibrational mode of the first ion is coupled to the cavity field via a linear-mixing interaction and the vibrational mode of the second ion is coupled to the cavity field via an effective parametric interaction, respectively. It is found that when the effective strength ${r}_{1}$ of the coupling between the first ion and the cavity field is stronger than the strength ${r}_{2}$ of the coupling between the second ion and the cavity field, the motional state of the two ions develops into a robust two-mode mixed Gaussian entangled state and the two-mode squeezing of phonons appears. But the entanglement between the cavity mode and the vibrational mode of the second ion can only happen periodically in a small time range. When ${r}_{1}<{r}_{2}$, only the entanglement between the two vibrational modes appears but the two-mode squeezing does not exist. And the entanglement between the cavity mode and the motional mode of the second ion can also take place in a small time range.

Schrodinger-cat states and entanglement in cavity QED with trapped ions

F. L. Semião, A. Vidiella-Barranco

We propose a scheme to generate a particular kind of tripartite entangled states using a single two-level trapped ion coupled to a quantized monomode electromagnetic field within an optical cavity. The resulting state involves motional Schr\\"odinger-cat states of the trapped ion, its internal electronic states, and Fock states of the cavity field. By means of a measurement of the internal state of the ion, it is also possible to generate either entangled bipartite states involving light and motion or single motional Schr\\"odinger-cat states. Our proposal is based on a previously introduced intensity dependent Hamiltonian [Phys. Rev. A 66, 063403 (2002)] for a trapped ion in a cavity.

Collapse and revival dynamics of two entangled trapped ions

Atle Svandal, J. P. Hansen

We study the long-time dynamics of two entangled ions coupled by a single vibrational mode and two lasers with different frequencies as proposed by M\o{}lmer and S\o{}rensen [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 1835 (1999)]. It is shown that the time development involves collapses and revivals well known from the dynamics of a single atom in a cavity or in a trap. The revival time is found to be insensitive to the details of the initial collective vibrational state. Therefore, revival and collapse phenomena are obtained for coherent, thermal as well as other vibrational states.

Cavity QED with cold trapped ions

We analyze the quantum motion of a cold, trapped two-level ion interacting with a quantized light field in a single-mode cavity. We show that in the nonclassical Lamb-Dicke limit the time evolution of the vibrational mode representing the quantized motion of the center of mass of the trapped ion is very sensitive to the quantum statistics of the light field. We also show that the system under consideration may evolve into the maximally entangled three-particle Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state. We briefly discuss the dynamics of a cluster of two-level ions trapped in a cavity and interacting with a quantized light field.

Motion-light parametric amplifier and entanglement distributor

Amy Peng, A. S. Parkins

We propose a scheme for entangling the motional mode of a trapped atom with a propagating light field via a cavity-mediated parametric interaction. We then show that if this light field is subsequently coupled to a second distant atom via a cavity-mediated linear-mixing interaction, it is possible to transfer the entanglement from the light beam to the motional mode of the second atom to create an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen--type entangled state of the positions and momenta of two distantly separated atoms.
