Abstract

Rabi oscillations are observed in the optically induced time-resolved Faraday rotation from a strong-coupling microcavity. They reveal the dynamics of the excitonic part of the polariton state, including the spin related information. The oscillations of the same period are observed at both circular and linear pumping, suggesting the splitting of the ground polariton state into a linearly polarized doublet.

Microcavity polariton spin quantum beats without a magnetic field: A manifestation of Coulomb exchange in dense and polarized polariton systems

P. Renucci, Th. Amand, X. Marie +4 more

Microcavity polariton spin dynamics is investigated in high-finesse microcavities under resonant excitation using polarization- and time-resolved secondary emission spectroscopy. Using an appropriate calibration procedure, the instantaneous polariton occupation numbers of the modes with $\mathbf{k}\ensuremath{\approx}\mathbf{0}$ wave vectors can be determined. When the phase-matching conditions are achieved, we show that Coulomb scattering dominates the other processes, and that stimulation occurs when the occupation of the $\mathbf{k}\ensuremath{\approx}\mathbf{0}$ final state with a given mode polarization approaches unity. Under elliptically polarized light, we show that the stimulated polariton scattering leads to an increase with time of the circular polarization of the $\mathbf{k}\ensuremath{\approx}\mathbf{0}$ states, while the linear polarization dynamics is characterized first by a fast drop to negative or zero values immediately after the excitation pulse, followed by weak-amplitude nonperiodic oscillations. The latter are interpreted as the manifestation of the pseudospin precession of the pumped polariton modes around the self-induced exchange effective field.

Quantum Theory of Spin Dynamics of Exciton-Polaritons in Microcavities

Kirill V. Kavokin, Ivan Andreevich Shelykh, Alexey Vitalievich Kavokin +2 more

We present the quantum theory of momentum and spin relaxation of exciton-polaritons in microcavities. We show that giant longitudinal-transverse splitting of the polaritons mixes their spin states, which results in beats between right- and left-circularly polarized photoluminescence of microcavities, as was recently experimentally observed [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 077402 (2002)]]. This effect is strongly sensitive to the bosonic stimulation of polariton scattering.

Time-resolved vacuum Rabi oscillations in a semiconductor quantum microcavity

Theodore B. Norris, June‐Koo Kevin Rhee, C.-Y. Sung +3 more

We have used femtosecond optical spectroscopy to observe directly the vacuum Rabi oscillations associated with the coupled exciton-photon mode splitting in a semiconductor quantum microcavity. When the microcavity is impulsively excited by a coherent short optical pulse, the time-resolved emission from the cavity shows beats corresponding to the oscillation between cavity and exciton modes, with a decay corresponding to approximately twice the cavity lifetime. Interferometric pump-probe measurements clearly show the coherent evolution of the cavity polarization.

Delayed Formation of Landau Polaritons in Phase-Resolved THz Spectroscopy

Noureddine Charrouj, Yurii Ivonyak, Dmitriy Yavorskiy +4 more

Strong light-matter coupling gives rise to polaritons through coherent and periodic energy exchange between electromagnetic cavity fields and material excitations. While this interaction is typically inferred from spectral mode splitting, its dynamics remain largely unexplored. Here, using phase-resolved terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, we observe Rabi oscillations of Landau polaritons formed by coupling the cyclotron resonance in a GaAs/Al$_{0.36}$Ga$_{0.64}$As two-dimensional electron gas with Fabry-Perot cavity modes. By employing cross-polarized spectroscopy and magnetic-field differential, we resolve the temporal beating of the cyclotron resonance oscillations. Remarkably, we find that the Rabi oscillations do not start immediately after excitation of the cyclotron resonance, but after a delay corresponding to one cavity round-trip time. This demonstrates that the strong-coupling regime sets up only after the formation of the cavity mode field. Our results provide direct insight into the dynamics of hybrid light-matter states in the THz regime.

Time-resolved study of vacuum Rabi oscillations in a semiconductor microcavity

June‐Koo Kevin Rhee, Theodore B. Norris, Yasuhiko Arakawa +2 more

Recent progress in vertical surface-emitting-laser-diode technology has raised considerable interest in cavity-QED effects in high-quality vertical semiconductor microcavities. When an excitonic transition and a single cavity mode are strongly coupled, the normal modes of the system are coupled modes split by the vacuum-Rabi frequency, corresponding in the time domain to an oscillation of the excitation between modes of exciton and photon character. Recently, the vacuum-Rabi splitting and preliminary observations of time-domain oscillation in semiconductor quantum microcavities have been reported.1,2 In this paper we investigate rigorously the time-domain vacuum-Rabi oscillation by femtosecond upconversion and pump-probe techniques.
