Quantum variational learning for quantum error-correcting codes

Chenfeng Cao, Chao Zhang, Zipeng Wu +2 more

Quantum error correction is believed to be a necessity for large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computation. In the past two decades, various constructions of quantum error-correcting codes (QECCs) have been developed, leading to many good code families. However, the majority of these codes are not suitable for near-term quantum devices. Here we present VarQEC, a noise-resilient variational quantum algorithm to search for quantum codes with a hardware-efficient encoding circuit. The cost functions are inspired by the most general and fundamental requirements of a QECC, the Knill-Laflamme conditions. Given the target noise channel (or the target code parameters) and the hardware connectivity graph, we optimize a shallow variational quantum circuit to prepare the basis states of an eligible code. In principle, VarQEC can find quantum codes for any error model, whether additive or non-additive, degenerate or non-degenerate, pure or impure. We have verified its effectiveness by (re)discovering some symmetric and asymmetric codes, e.g., ((n,2n−6,3))2 for n from 7 to 14. We also found new ((6,2,3))2 and ((7,2,3))2 codes that are not equivalent to any stabilizer code, and extensive numerical evidence with VarQEC suggests that a ((7,3,3))2 code does not exist. Furthermore, we found many new channel-adaptive codes for error models involving nearest-neighbor correlated errors. Our work sheds new light on the understanding of QECC in general, which may also help to enhance near-term device performance with channel-adaptive error-correcting codes.

General quantum error-correcting code with entanglement based on codeword stabilized quantum code

Jeonghwan Shin, Jun Heo, Todd A. Brun

In this paper, we introduce a unified framework to construct entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes, including additive and nonadditive codes, based on the codeword stabilized framework on subsystems. The codeword stabilized (CWS) framework is a scheme to construct quantum error-correcting codes (QECCs) including both additive and nonadditive codes, and gives a method to construct a QECC from a classical error-correcting code in standard form. Entangled pairs of qubits (ebits) can be used to improve capacity of quantum error correction. In addition, it gives a method to overcome the dual-containing constraint. Operator quantum error correction (OQEC) gives a general framework to construct quantum error-correcting codes. We construct OQEC codes with ebits based on the CWS framework. This new scheme, entanglement-assisted operator codeword stabilized (EAOCWS) quantum codes, is the most general framework we know of to construct both additive and nonadditive codes from classical error-correcting codes. We describe the formalism of our scheme, demonstrate the construction with examples, and give several EAOCWS codes.

Entanglement assisted quantum error correcting code from Hadamard matrices

Min Liu, Xiaoqing Tan, Daipengwei Bao +1 more

The classical linear codes that construct quantum error correction codes need to meet certain specific conditions. The proposal of entanglement-assisted quantum error correcting codes eliminates the restriction of these conditions, so all classical linear codes can be constructed into entanglement-assisted quantum error correcting codes. The Hadamard matrix is a special type of orthogonal matrix. Hadamard codes, constructed based on the standard form of Hadamard matrices, are a type of linear complementary dual (LCD) codes. By extending the generator and parity-check matrices of Hadamard codes, two types of classical codes whose parameters are [(l+1)(n−1), n−1] and [3n−3, n−1] maintain the LCD property. Utilizing the relationship between their LCD property and the dimensions of the Euclidean hull, this paper constructs two types of EAQECCs based on Hadamard matrices. These EAQECCs can achieve maximal entanglement, resulting in higher code rates and net rates compared to other EAQECCs. Their parameters are [[3n−3, 2n−2, d≥1; n−1]] and [[2n−2, n−1, d≥1; n−1]], respectively.
