Abstract

A theoretical investigation is made of the feasibility of simultaneous laser action due to adjacent transitions in atoms of a gaseous medium with level momenta j/sub b/..-->..j/sub c/ and j/sub b/..-->..j/sub a/. In the case of small relative excesses of the population inversions of the active levels over the threshold, an expression is derived for the region of simultaneous laser action with parallel and orthogonally polarized fields. The limiting cases of homogeneously and inhomogeneously broadened lines are studied. Calculations are made allowing for depolarizing atomic collisions. For a homogeneously broadened line and negligible degeneracy of the levels, a region of simultaneous laser action is found for an arbitrary relative excess of the population inversion over the threshold.

Competition between modes generated due to adjacent transitions

D. S. Bakaev, Yu. A. Vdovin

An analysis is made of competition between modes emitted due to adjacent transitions having a common upper level. Conditions are obtained for the onset of lasing due to one transition in the presence of lasing of arbitrary intensity due to the other transition in standing- and traveling-wave lasers. Both transitions were assumed to be homogeneously broadened. Allowance is made for level degeneracy, collisional broadening of the dipole-forbidden transition between the lower active levels, and collisions with the buffer gas that equalize the populations of the lower active levels. The ranges of single-mode and two-mode lasing are determined as a function of the radiation intensity, the spectroscopic parameters of the transitions, and their collisional broadening.

Competition between high-intensity modes of different polarizations in a gas laser

I. V. Evseev, V. M. Ermanchenko, V K Matskevich

A theoretical analysis is made of the stability range of stimulated emission of two modes with orthogonal and parallel polarizations. The case of transitions between active levels of momenta ja = jb = 1 in a relatively strongly excited medium is considered. It is found that, in contrast to the case of parallel polarizations, emission of two modes with orthogonal polarizations is possible even when the mode spacing is small. Investigation is made of the influence of the quadrupole polarization of the medium on the width of the two-mode emission range. It is shown that the results obtained by calculating the polarization of the medium to within terms cubic in respect of the field amplitude describe correctly relatively highly excited active media.

Three-mode emission from a gas laser. I. Stability of steady-state symmetric emission

V. M. Ermachenko, V K Matskevich

The polarization of the active medium of a three-mode gas laser is calculated allowing for depolarizing atomic collisions and for the active level degeneracy. The calculations are carried out to terms of the third order in the field. The expressions obtained are used to explain some of the published experimental results.

Theory of Double Resonance in Gaseous Lasers

W. Culshaw

The simultaneous action of a rf perturbation between the Zeeman sublevels of an atomic transition, which is also producing laser oscillation, is considered. The complete Hamiltonian of the system is made time-independent by appropriate unitary transformations, and the corresponding steady-state solutions of the density matrix are deduced using appropriate rate constants. Results for stationary atoms indicate a dependence of the threshold for oscillation on the rf perturbation, together with rf resonance effects which increase the laser intensity some two or three times for suitable transitions. The increase in intensity is greatest for rf perturbations between the upper Zeeman levels, which also have the smaller resonance width, because of the longer lifetimes involved. Such effects will be small unless there is a reasonable difference in the populations of the Zeeman levels in the absence of the rf perturbation. Appropriate laser transitions, cavity tuning, and polarization characteristics must thus be used to obtain maximum effect, and examples are given. The atomic motion is included in the theory in an approximate way, and similar conclusions are derived as regards the variations of laser intensity. However, no dependence of the threshold on the rf perturbation is then indicated, the former being determined by the relatively large Doppler width. Finally, some consideration is given to cases where more than one laser transition occurs between the Zeeman levels.

Limits of stability of two-mode emission in a strong field

I. V. Evseev, V. M. Ermachenko

A theoretical analysis is made of the two-mode emission from a gas laser in the vicinity of the symmetric position of the modes relative to the center of the gain profile when the intensities of the modes in the symmetric position cannot be regarded as low. The example of a homogeneously broadened spectral line is used in an investigation of the range of stable two-mode emission as a function of the relative excitation of the medium.

Gas laser with a phase anisotropy in an axial magnetic field for arbitrary relative excitation of the active medium

А. Ч. Измайлов

A theoretical analysis is made of the characteristics of a single- and two-mode gas laser with an anisotropic resonator in an axial magnetostatic field with arbitrary relative excitation of the active medium for an atomic transition with total level momenta of 0 and 1. Using an example of a homogeneously broadened spectral line, it is shown that the results of calculations made to within terms cubic with respect to the electric field give a correct qualitative description of the characteristics of two-mode lasing.
