Many-Dimensional Quantum Energy Flow at Low Energy

Abstract

Criteria for ergodicity and rates of energy flow in a quantum mechanical system of $N$ coupled anharmonic oscillators where $N$ is large are determined at energies near the ground state of the system. High-order resonances are important for the transition at large $N$. The role of numerous virtual transitions, ``vibrational superexchange,'' in global transport is examined both for typical parts of the state space and special states often interrogated experimentally.

SURFACE CROSSING AND ENERGY FLOW IN MANY-DIMENSIONAL QUANTUM SYSTEMS

Chenghao Zhang, Peter Guy Wolynes

Vibrational energy flow in molecules, like the dynamics of other many dimensional finite systems, involves quantum transport across a dense network of near resonant states. For molecules in their electronic ground state, the network is ordinarily provided by anharmonic vibrational Fermi resonances. Surface crossing between different electronic states provides another route to chaotic motion and energy redistribution. We show that nonadiabatic coupling between electronic energy surfaces facilitates vibrational energy flow, and conversely, anharmonic vibrational couplings facilitate nonadiabatic electronic state mixing. A generalization of the Logan-Wolynes theory of quantum energy flow in many-dimensional Fermi resonance systems to the two-surface case gives a phase diagram describing the boundary between localized quantum dynamics and global energy flow. We explore these predictions and test them using a model inspired by the problem of electronic excitation energy transfer in the photosynthetic reaction center. Using an explicit numerical solution of the time dependent Schrödinger equation for this ten-dimensional model, we find quite good agreement with the expectations from the approximate analytical theory.

The role of anharmonicity and coupling in quantum computing based on vibrational qubits

C. Gollub, Ulrike Troppmann, Regina de Vivie‐Riedle

We analyse the effects of molecular characteristics on the structure of global quantum gates and the complexity of the resulting mechanisms systematically with the goal of rating a molecule's suitability for molecular quantum computing. One decisive property of a molecular vibration is the anharmonicity and in an extension to multimode systems the mode coupling has to be taken into account additionally. In a parametrized two-dimensional model system, we tune these characteristic properties and explore their effects on quantum gates. We find that the interplay of the anharmonicity and the coupling is of prime importance and leads to two basic control mechanisms for all systems. The features of quantum gate laser fields are explained with characteristic transition frequencies, determined by the molecular parameters, and the limits to obtain simple structures are identified.

Exact solution for low energy quantum anharmonic vibrations in a long polymer chain

Alexander L. Burin

We propose the algorithm for determining vibrational quantum eigenstates of periodic linear chain of atoms coupled by harmonic and third order anharmonic interactions (Fermi-Ulam-Pasta $α$ problem) in the long wavelength limit within the resonant approach. Eigenstates can be encoded by the sequence of integer numbers determining their energies and wavefunctions. Using these eigenstates we described a single phonon state time evolution showing coherent oscillations. The applications of theory to vibrational energy transport and quantum informatics are discussed.
