It is proved that the spectral analysis of Dekker's covariant path integral for continuous Markov and quantum processes in curved spaces leads to a lattice expression that is exactly equal to Graham's fixed-point propagator. The proof proceeds in Riemannian normal coordinates. In addition, the well-known difference between the scalar potentials in the formal path integrals is explained.

The Onsager-Machlup Lagrangian defined by the functional-integral representation of general continuous Markov processes is derived explicitly and concisely. Attention is given both to the mathematics and its physical interpretation. The method is based on (i) the consideration of continuous and differentiable paths connecting fixed end points in the convariant propagator, (ii) the application of a recently developed Fourier-series analysis of these trajectories in locally flat spaces, and (iii) the use of the proper transformations between locally Euclidean and globally Riemannian geometries. The spectral analysis allows for arbitrary paths rather than an a priori straight line even in the short-time propagator and avoids any ad hoc discretization rule. Specialized to globally flat spaces the result agrees with formulas given by Stratonovich, Horsthemke and Bach, Graham, and Dekker. It is demonstrated that a unique covariant path integral is equivalent to a whole class of stochastically equivalent lattice expressions.
DeWitt’s covariant formulation of path integration [B. De Witt, “Dynamical theory in curved spaces. I. A review of the classical and quantum action principles,” Rev. Mod. Phys. 29, 377–397 (1957)] has two practical advantages over the traditional methods of “lattice approximations;” there is no ordering problem, and classical symmetries are manifestly preserved at the quantum level. Applying the spectral theorem for unbounded self-adjoint operators, we provide a rigorous proof of the convergence of certain path integrals on Riemann surfaces of constant curvature −1. The Pauli–DeWitt curvature correction term arises, as in DeWitt’s work. Introducing a Fuchsian group Γ of the first kind, and a continuous, bounded, Γ-automorphic potential V, we obtain a Feynman–Kac formula for the automorphic Schrödinger equation on the Riemann surface Γ\ℍ. We analyze the Wick rotation and prove the strong convergence of the so-called Feynman maps [K. D. Elworthy, Path Integration on Manifolds, Mathematical Aspects of Superspace, edited by Seifert, Clarke, and Rosenblum (Reidel, Boston, 1983), pp. 47–90] on a dense set of states. Finally, we give a new proof of some results in C. Grosche and F. Steiner, “The path integral on the Poincare upper half plane and for Liouville quantum mechanics,” Phys. Lett. A 123, 319–328 (1987).
Path integrals constitute powerful representations for both quantum and stochastic dynamics. Yet despite many decades of intensive studies, there is no consensus on how to formulate them for dynamics in curved space, or how to make them covariant with respect to nonlinear transform of variables (NTV). In this work, we construct a rigorous and covariant formulation of time-slicing path integrals for dynamics in curved space. We first establish a rigorous criterion for equivalence of time-slice Green's function (TSGF) in the continuum limit (Lemma 1). This implies the existence of infinitely many equivalent representations for time-slicing path integral. We then show that, for any dynamics with second order generator, all time-slice actions are equivalent to a Gaussian (Lemma 2). We further construct a continuous family of equivalent path-integral actions parameterized by an interpolation parameter α∈[0,1] (Lemma 3). The action generically contains term linear in Δx , whose concrete form depends on α . Finally we also establish the covariance of our path-integral formalism, by demonstrating how the action transforms under NTV. The α=0 representation of time-slice action is particularly convenient because it is Gaussian and transforms as a scalar, as long as Δx transforms according to Ito's formula .
The quantization of physical systems moving on group and symmetric spaces has been an area of active research over the past three decades. This book shows that it is possible to introduce a representation-independent propagator for a real, separable, connected and simply connected Lie group with irreducible, square-integrable representations. For a given set of kinematical variables this propagator is a single generalized function independent of any particular choice of fiducial vector and the irreducible representations of the Lie group generated by these kinematical variables, which nonetheless correctly propagates each element of a continuous representation based on the coherent states associated with these kinematical variables.Furthermore, the book shows that it is possible to construct regularized lattice phase space path integrals for a real, separable, connected and simply connected Lie group with irreducible, square-integrable representations, and although the configuration space is in general a multidimensional curved manifold, it is shown that the resulting lattice phase space path integral has the form of a lattice phase space path integral on a multidimensional flat manifold. Hence, a novel and extremely natural phase space path integral quantization is obtained for general physical systems whose kinematical variables are the generators of a connected and simply connected Lie group. This novel phase space path integral quantization is (a) exact, (b) more general than, and (c) free from the limitations of the previously considered path integral quantizations of free physical systems moving on group manifolds. To illustrate the general theory, a representation-independent propagator is explicitly constructed for SU(2) and the affine group
A particular family of Discrete Time Quantum Walks (DTQWs) simulating fermion propagation in 2D curved space-time is revisited. Usual continuous covariant derivatives and spin-connections are generalized into discrete covariant derivatives along the lattice coordinates and discrete connections. The concepts of metrics and 2-beins are also extended to the discrete realm. Two slightly different Riemann curvatures are then defined on the space-time lattice as the curvatures of the discrete spin connection. These two curvatures are closely related and one of them tends at the continuous limit towards the usual, continuous Riemann curvature. A simple example is also worked out in full.
