Abstract

We report on the first measurements of the intrinsic dissipation in a macroscopic system cooled at very low temperature (35 mK) and operating in the quantum regime. The system under study is an rf SQUID with a high quality Josephson junction. Below 50 mK the tunneling probability of escape from a metastable well vs applied flux presents a series of maxima due to energy level quantization. From the shape of the tunneling probability we can evaluate the intrinsic dissipation related to the overall system as well as the coherence time related to the Rabi oscillations in a future macroscopic quantum coherence experiment.

Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling in Josephson Junctions and Squids

We report experiments on energy level quantization in Nb/AlOx/Nb Josephson junctions while measurements on SQUIDs are in progress. Data on the presence of energy level quantization are shown at temperatures above the classical-quantum regime crossover temperature. This has been possible by extending the measurements of the rate of the escape from the zero-voltage state at higher sweep bias rate in order to induce non-stationary conditions in the energy potential describing the junction dynamics. Data are compatible with extremely low "effective" dissipation in our system. Theoretical predictions on quantum effects related to the presence of non-stationary conditions in the potential associated to a rf SQUID are reported in view of new possible experiments.

Measurements of the decoherence time from energy level quantization in Josephson junctions and rf SQUIDs

C. Cosmelli, F. Chiarello, Gianluca D’Agosta +2 more

We have measured the effective resistance of a Josephson junction and of an rf SQUID cooled at a temperature between 18 mK and 35 mK. From a fit of the data with a simplified solution of the master equation describing the system dynamics we found for both devices an effective resistance R/spl ap/4-5 M/spl Omega/. This value, in the same system cooled at 5 mK, would lead to a decoherence time of approximately 1.1 /spl mu/s allowing one to perform measurements of the Rabi oscillations having a tunneling frequency of the order of few MHz. This value is very promising also for the realization of qu-bits realized by means of Josephson devices.

Macroscopic quantum tunneling and energy-level quantization in the zero voltage state of the current-biased Josephson junction

John M. Martinis

A macroscopic variable, the phase difference across a Josephson junction, is shown to obey quantum mechanics by observing the phenomena of energy-level quantization and quantum tunneling. The relevant parameters of the junction were determined .!.!! .ill!:!, in the thermal regime from the dependence of the escape rate on bias current and from resonant activation in the presence of microwaves. The first observation of quantized energy levels for this system is reported. The positions of these energy levels are in quantitative agreement with the quantum mechanical predictions based on the measured junction parameters.A model is presented that predicts correctly the observed resonance shapes. The measured value of the escape rate out of the zero-voltage state for an underdamped (Q -30) junction was found to be independent of temperature at low temperatures. This low temperature escape rate was in excellent agreement with the prediction for macroscopic quantum tunneling, with no adjustable parameters.Jolw rJt..

Observation of macroscopic quantum tunnelling in a rf superconducting quantum interference device system

We present the experimental observation of the effects of macroscopic quantum tunnelling in a SQUID device, consisting of a rf SQUID coupled to a readout system based on a dc SQUID sensor. Data on the decay rate from the metastable flux states of a rf SQUID are reported, both in the classical and quantum regimes. The low dissipation level and the good insulation of the probe from external noise are encouraging in view of building a macroscopic quantum coherent system.

MACROSCOPIC QUANTUM COHERENCE IN JOSEPHSON SYSTEMS

We present our recent experiments on macroscopic tunneling in the quantum regime for underdamped Josephson junctions with different classical-quantum crossover temperatures. These experiments are performed towards the observation of macroscopic quantum coherence in Josephson systems. A new method to measure coherence in a two-level system based on the adiabatic inversion in an rf squid, is presented. This approach could open new perspectives in view of realization of an elementary quantum bit.

We present an experimental characterization of $\mathrm{Nb}∕\mathrm{Al}{\mathrm{O}}_{x}∕\mathrm{Nb}$ Josephson devices in the quantum regime. Josephson junctions and fully integrated Josephson devices consisting of an rf SQUID coupled to a read-out system based on a dc SQUID have been measured. Data on the decay rates from the metastable states show evidence of macroscopic quantum tunneling with a very low dissipation level and a high isolation of the devices from the external environment.
