Nuclear Structure in the Framework of the Unitary Correlation Operator Method

Robert Roth, Thomas Neffb, Hans Feldmeier

Correlations play a crucial role in the nuclear many-body problem. We give an overview of recent developments in nuclear structure theory aiming at the description of these interaction-induced correlations by unitary transformations. We focus on the Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM), which offers a very intuitive, universal and robust approach for the treatment of short-range correlations. We discuss the UCOM formalism in detail and highlight the connections to other methods for the description of short-range correlations and the construction of effective interactions. In particular, we juxtapose UCOM with the Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG) approach, which implements the unitary transformation of the Hamiltonian through a very flexi-ble flow-equation formulation. The UCOM- and SRG-transformed interactions are compared on the level of matrix elements and in many-body calculations within the no-core shell model and with Hartree-Fock plus perturbation theory for a variety of nuclei and observables. These calcu-lations provide a detailed picture of the similarities and differences as well as the advantages and limitations of unitary transformation methods.

Pair correlations and the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method in the theory of nuclear structure

V. V. Voronov, R. V. Jolos, N. N. Arsenyev +1 more

It is shown that an idea of the superfluidity of nuclear matter and the u -v transformation of Bogoliubov, time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method have made a strong impact on the development of the modern nuclear theory. Some applications of the Bogoliubov methods to describe properties of the low-lying collective nuclear states and the giant resonances are demonstrated.

Finite particle-number description of symmetric nuclear matter with spin excitations of high-momentum pairs induced by the tensor force

Niu Wan, Takayuki Myo, Hiroki Takemoto +6 more

We study symmetric nuclear matter using bare nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interactions with the finite particle-number approach within finite cubic boxes. Due to the $NN$ correlations originating from the bare $NN$ interaction, two nucleons can be excited to the high-momentum region, leading to the increase of the kinetic energy in nuclear matter. We further consider the spin excitations in the nucleon pairs, where the spins of the two nucleons are changed, and this excitation is important for the tensor correlation. The unitary correlation operator method (UCOM) is used to treat the short-range correlation. The tail correction coming from the neighboring boxes is also included. We demonstrate the contributions of various excitations of nucleon pairs as well as the tail correction to the total energy at normal density. We also discuss the effects of UCOM and correlated nucleon pairs on the density dependence of the total energy. We calculate the equations of state of symmetric nuclear matter using two kinds of the Argonne potentials and the results agree with those from other many-body theories. The density dependences of the Hamiltonian components are also shown.
