Fluorescence spectrum of a one-atom laser in the strong-coupling regime

Abstract

The multicomponent spectrum of the resonance fluorescence is studied based on the expansion of the Green function with respect to the coherent states for a one-atom laser. An analytical solution is derived for the spectrum in the frequency range corresponding to the vacuum Rabi oscillations in the approximation of the strong atom-field coupling and a low incoherent pump intensity.

Auto-and cross-correlation functions of a one-atom laser in a regime of strong coupling

T. B. Karlovich, S. Ya. Kilin

The spectral properties of an incoherently pumped one-atom laser operating in a regime of strong coupling are studied. The spectrum of the field outgoing from the cavity, the spectrum of resonance fluorescence of an atom, and the spectrum of the atom—field cross-correlation function are numerically calculated. Relations between the parameters of the system for which spectral lines corresponding to eigenstates of the Jaynes—Cummings Hamiltonian are resolved are found. A method for determining the widths of resonances from the spectrum of the atom—field cross-correlation function is proposed, and a procedure for measuring this function using spectroscopy of intensity fluctuations is described.

Resonance fluorescence spectra from a three level atom interacting with a strong bichromatic field: induced two photon transitions

Douglas A. Hutchinson, Christine Downie, Constantine Mavroyannis

This investigation describes the interaction of a three level atom with two laser fields. One of the transitions from the ground state is in resonance with twice the frequency of the first laser and the other transition from the ground state is in resonance with the second laser. The Green's function formalism is used to derive expressions from which the induced two photon and one photon excitation spectra are computed. Also, approximate expressions are derived for the excitation spectra in the appropriate frequency regions. These results agree well with the numerical computations based upon the precise expressions. The interference between the two transitions produce some splittings; these splittings depend upon the Rabi frequency of the one photon transition. The intensities of the weak peaks depend upon the ratio of the Rabi frequency of the two photon transition to the frequency of the first laser. Some features of the excitation spectra are interpreted in terms of previous knowledge about the behavior of two level atoms in strong laser fields.

Resonance fluorescence in intense laser fields

Dan E. Browne, Christoph H. Keitel

We consider the resonance fluorescence of a two-level atom in a vacuum with a high intensity driving field, such that the Rabi frequency of the field is non-negligible up to frequencies comparable to the transition frequency of the atom. At these high intensities, the conventional rotating wave approximation cannot be applied to the atom-laser Hamiltonian and the modal densities of the vacuum at the dressed transition frequencies differ significantly from each other. On treating the counter-rotating part of the Hamiltonian as a perturbation and carrying out the Weisskopf-Wigner approximation in the dressed states basis, we find that the high driving intensity leads to significant deviations from the traditional Mollow resonance fluorescence spectrum. In particular we find unequally intense Mollow side-bands and that the generation of higher order triplets and harmonics is substantially enhanced by the high vacuum modal density at the corresponding high resonance frequencies.

Resonance fluorescence spectra from a three-level atom interacting with a strong bichromatic field

M. P. Sharma, Antonio Guillermo Jose Balbin Villaverde, Constantine Mavroyannis

We have studied the fluorescence spectra arising from the interaction of a three-level atom with two strong electromagnetic fields whose initially populated modes are equal to the two atomic transition frequencies, respectively. The Green's function formalism has been used to calculate the excitation spectrum of the system. An expression for the spectral function describing the excitation spectrum of the system has been derived in a closed form in the limit of high photon densities. Numerical computation of the expression for the spectral function indicates that at each transition frequency there may exist either one pair or two pairs or three pairs of sidebands, in addition to the central peak, depending upon the relative strength of the Rabi frequencies involved.

Resonance fluorescence spectrum of intense amplitude modulated laser light

Barbara Blind, P. Fontana, P Thomann

The spectrum of light scattered by a two-level atom in an intense laser beam with amplitude modulated light is calculated. The spectrum is obtained by evaluating the Fourier transform of the autocorrelation function of the dipole moment. The modulation introduces new components in both the coherent and incoherent parts of the frequency distribution. The total intensity when plotted as a function of the average Rabi frequency exhibits parametric resonances.

Narrow spectral feature in resonance fluorescence with a single monochromatic laser field

Jörg Evers, Christoph H. Keitel

We describe the resonance fluorescence spectrum of an atomic three-level system where two of the states are coupled by a single monochromatic laser field. The influence of the third energy level, which interacts with the two laser-coupled states only via radiative decays, is studied in detail. For a suitable choice of parameters, this system gives rise to a very narrow structure at the laser frequency in the fluorescence spectrum which is not present in the spectrum of a two-level atom. We find those parameter ranges by a numerical analysis and use the results to derive analytical expressions for the additional narrow peak. We also derive an exact expression for the peak intensity under the assumption that a random telegraph model is applicable to the system. This model and a simple spring model are then used to describe the physical origins of the additional peak. Using these results, we explain the connection between our system, a three-level system in the V configuration where both transitions are laser driven, and a related experiment that was recently reported.
