Self-shift and foreign-gas-induced shift of molecular Rydberg states measured in a thermionic heat-pipe oven

Abstract

By a simple technique it is possible to discriminate experimentally between the self-shift and foreign-gas-induced shift of Rydberg levels excited in a heat-pipe system. Illustrative results for two particular rydberg levels of the potassium dimer K 2 are presented. The results concern the shift induced by the alkali itself and the shift induced by Ar and He. Earlier reported discrepancies are removed.

Two-step photoexcitation of K2molecular Rydberg states in a heat-pipe oven

Anthony F. J. van Raan, Jos E. M. Haverkort, B L Mehta +1 more

The authors have demonstrated the production of molecular Rydberg state in K 2 by means of two-step photoexcitation with help of thermionic detection in a disc-shaped heat-pipe oven. Preliminary results concern a spectroscopic investigation of the very high 'Rydberg region'. Results of the pressure shift of Rydberg lines are also presented.

Collision-induced shifts of Rydberg levels of strontium

M. Marafi, K. S. Bhatia, Yacoub Makdisi +1 more

Measurements of spectral line shifts induced by collisions with rare gas perturbers are reported. High Rydberg states were prepared by multiphoton excitation using an excimer pumped tunable dye laser. A thermionic detector inside a heat pipe was used to collect the ionization products resulting from excited states. Analysis of the data for the shifts of the absorption transition to 5snd 1D 2 states in strontium is presented.

Interseries interaction in bound states

Thomas F. Gallagher

Perturbed Rydberg series One of the most intensively studied manifestations of channel interaction in the bound states is the perturbation of the regularity of the Rydberg series, which is evident if one simply measures the energies of the atomic states. Although measurements of Rydberg energy levels by classical absorption spectroscopy show the perturbations in the series which are optically accessible from the ground state, the tunable laser has made it possible to study series which are not connected to the ground state by electric dipole transitions as well. One of the approaches which has been used widely is that used by Armstrong et al . As shown in Fig. 22.1, a heat pipe oven contains Ba vapor at a pressure of ∼1 Torr. Three pulsed tunable dye laser beams pass through the oven. Two are fixed in frequency, to excite the Ba atoms from the ground 6s 2 1 S o state to the 3 P 1 state and then to the 6s7s 3 S 1 state. The third laser is scanned in frequency over the 6s7s 3 S 1 → 6s n p transitions. The Ba atoms excited to the 6s n p states are ionized either by collisional ionization or by the absorption of another photon. The ions produced migrate towards a negatively biased electrode inside the heat pipe. The electrode has a space charge cloud of electrons near it which limits the emission current.

Theory of quantum oscillations in self-broadening of 4[sup 2]S-n[sup 2]S Rydberg transitions in potassium

R. M. Herman, M. E. Henry

A pseudohamiltonian impact theory for describing Rydberg transition line shapes is proposed. Preliminary results give lineshapes in reasonable agreement with experiment, including the quantum oscillations in alkali self broadening and shifting, and rare gas broadening.

Collisions between Sr Rydberg atoms of intermediate and high principal quantum numbers and noble gases at thermal energies

K -D Heber, P. J. West, Eckart Matthias

Pressure shift and broadening measurements of 5snd 1 D 2 and 5snd 3 D 2 Rydberg states of Sr I due to Xe have been performed in the range 8<or=n<or=35 by means of Doppler-free two-photon excitation, combined with thermionic detection and the use of a molecular frequency standard. The data show striking differences between pressure shifts and broadenings of singlet and triplet states, which up to now have not been predicted by theory.

State mixing in Rydberg atom — noble gas collisions

K.-D. Heber, P. J. West, Eckart Matthias

Pressure shift and broadening rates, caused by thermal collisions with xenon atoms, have been measured for 5snd 1D2 and 5snd 3D2 Rydberg states of SrI in the range 8≤n≤25 by means of Doppler‐free two‐photon excitation and thermionic detection. The results show drastically different resonant collisional admixtures for 1D2 and 3D2 states between 13≤n≤19. Above n=20 non‐resonant systematic deviations of shifts and broadenings between singlet and triplet 5snd states are observed.
