Abstract

We report the experimental observation of an optically controllable shift of the central frequency of a laser pulse, using a scheme based on dynamical electromagnetically induced transparency. This is evidence of frequency shift controllable by a coherent process. Original theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental data.

We report the first experimental observation of controllable temporal delay of wideband laser pulses (input spectral bandwidth of 3.3 GHz) using electromagnetically induced transparency. We obtain this result with limited temporal distortion of our pulses and excellent values of the delay-bandwidth product. Our experimental results are in agreement with a theoretical analysis.

Temporal compression of nanosecond laser pulses using coherent control

We present a study of the temporal compression of nanosecond laser pulses resulting from the coherent control peculiarities of the propagation dynamics in a regime of electromagnetically induced transparency. We describe the general theoretical framework and discuss the crucial conditions required in order to experimentally realize such a temporal compression scheme. A proof-of-concept experimental realization of a scheme of this type in a sample of hot sodium vapors is currently being implemented: we describe in detail the experimental setup designed for this purpose.

Coherent control of temporal pulse shaping by electromagnetically induced transparency

Roberto Buffa, Stefano Cavalieri, Marco V. Tognetti

We present the coherent control of the temporal shape of laser pulses obtained by exploiting the propagation dynamics of electromagnetically induced transparency. Temporal compression, as a special case of pulse tailoring, is discussed. We envisage applications in nonlinear optics processes and control of pulse shapes in the vacuum ultraviolet spectral region.

Dynamical control of pulse propagation in electromagnetically induced transparency

Martin Kiffner, Tarak Nath Dey

The influence of a phase-modulated control field on the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is investigated theoretically. We show that the phase modulation changes the dispersive properties of the medium considerably since it results in temporal oscillations of the transparency window in frequency space. This is in marked contrast to the standard EIT setup, where the transparency window is fixed and determined by the two-photon resonance condition. In particular, we find that the phase modulation enables the propagation of probe pulses with disjoint frequency spectra at different times and allows the shifting of the central frequency of a probe pulse almost without distortion of its shape. We employ the time-dependent susceptibility of the medium to explain and analyze our results and demonstrate that this concept yields qualitative as well as quantitative agreement with the numerical integration of Maxwell-Bloch equations. Our theoretical model can be applied to other media with time-dependent susceptibilities.

Coherent interactions of laser fields with resonant atomic and molecular transitions significantly modify optical characteristics of the medium via quantum interference between transition amplitudes. This interference can result in reduction or enhancement of the laser absorption, decrease of the group velocity of the laser pulse etc. The origin of all these processes is electromagnetically induced transparency. This effect is intensively investigated in the connection with its multiple applications: lasing without inversion, group velocity control, quantum optical storage and quantum computing, effective nonlinear interactions of low field intensities, high-precision measurements, spectroscopy and metrology, plasma diagnostics, atomic clock etc.
