Yangian symmetry of integrable quantum chains with long-range interactions and a new description of states in conformal field theory

Abstract

The SU(n) quantum chains with inverse-square exchange exhibit a novel form of Yangian symmetry compatible with periodic boundary conditions, allowing states to be countable. We characterize the ``supermultiplets'' of the spectrum in terms of generalized ``occupation numbers.'' We embed the model in the k=1 SU(n) Kac-Moody algebra and obtain a new classification of the states of conformal field theory, adapted to particlelike elementary excitations obeying fractional statistics.

Squeezed strings and Yangian symmetry of the Heisenberg chain with long-range interaction

Zou Ha, F. D. M. Haldane

The exact and complete set of highest-weight eigenstates of the finite-size SU(n) Heisenberg chain with inverse-square exchange (ISE) are constructed using the occupation-number representation of the ``strings,'' which can be considered as the unbroken resonating-valence bonds. The string description, which is believed to be exact only in the thermodynamic limit for the Bethe ansatz solvable models, becomes exact for any size ISE model due to the squeezing effect of the strings in the ISE limit. This feature provides a basis for the realization of the Yangian symmetry in the ISE model.

Integrable structure of BCD conformal field theory and boundary Bethe ansatz for affine Yangian

Alexey Litvinov, Ilya Vilkoviskiy

A bstract In these notes we study integrable structures of conformal field theory with BCD symmetry. We realise these integrable structures as $$ \mathfrak{gl} $$ gl (1) affine Yangian “spin chains” with boundaries. We provide three solutions of Sklyanin KRKR equation compatible with the affine Yangian R -matrix and derive Bethe ansatz equations for the spectrum. Our analysis provides a unified approach to the integrable structures with BCD symmetry including superalgebras.

Quantum Superspin Systems from Conformal Field Theory

Jochen Christian Peschutter

Phase transitions of second order play an important role in solid state physics. It is in their nature that they occur only in systems that are composed from an infinite number of components since, only that way, the necessary conditions for this (for example, scale invariance) are granted. Such a system at a second order phase transition is called critical. The infinite number of particles poses a particular challenge, even for the description of classical systems. Quantum mechanical systems, however, are distinctly more difficult to treat in this context, since the dimension of their state space grows exponentially with the number of their particles, not to mention the fact that only a few – and usually only one-dimensional – quantum systems are exactly solvable. One of these exactly solvable one-dimensional quantum systems is the SU(N) Haldane-Shastry spin chain that may be regarded as the archetype of long-range spin chains. Moreover, it is critical in the continuum limit and its effective low-energy theory is the so-called SU(N)_1 Wess-Zumino-Witten model. It is a quantum field theory which is not only conformally invariant, so, in particular, scale invariant, but, furthermore, exhibits additional symmetry in the shape of an infinite extension of the Lie algebra su(N) associated with SU(N). Recent studies show that, from these very structures of the SU(N)_1 WZW model, one can, in turn, derive spin systems, whose arrangement is not necessarily the one of a spin chain, but even two-dimensional distributions of the spins in the plane are possible. These systems are again characterized by long-range interactions, comparable to those of the Haldane-Shastry spin chain, which is also obtained as a result of an appropriate choice of parameters. \n \nIn this thesis, we extend the construction already known for the SU(N) case to the supersymmetric case GL(m|n). Here, we construct explicitly both, a special quantum state as well as a Hamiltonian that projects this quantum state to zero. We also discuss the Hamiltonian in the special case of the GL(1|1) spin chain and compare it to the respective GL(1|1) Haldane-Shastry spin chain on a bipartite state space. Both are critical and we identify the corresponding conformal field theories. Subsequently, we describe a generalization of this system in terms of two parameters and explain how its spectrum was found. It is then analyzed and its continuum limit is determined. In doing so, it shows that the system displays criticality only for generic values of one of the two parameters.

Emergence of Kac-Moody symmetry in critical quantum spin chains

Ruoshui Wang, Yijian Zou, Guifré Vidal

Given a critical quantum spin chain with a microscopic Lie group symmetry, corresponding, e.g., to $U(1)$ or $SU(2)$ spin isotropy, we numerically investigate the emergence of Kac-Moody symmetry at low energies and long distances. In that regime, one such critical quantum spin chain is described by a conformal field theory where the usual Virasoro algebra associated with conformal invariance is augmented with a Kac-Moody algebra associated with conserved currents. Specifically, we first propose a method to construct lattice operators corresponding to the Kac-Moody generators. We then numerically show that, when projected onto low-energy states of the quantum spin chain, these operators indeed approximately fulfill the Kac-Moody algebra. The lattice version of the Kac-Moody generators allows us to compute the so-called level constant and to organize the low-energy eigenstates of the lattice Hamiltonian into Kac-Moody towers. We illustrate the proposal with the XXZ model and the Heisenberg model with a next-to-nearest-neighbor coupling.

A novel class of translationally invariant spin chains with long-range interactions

B. Basu-Mallick, F. Finkel, A. González-López

Abstract We introduce a new class of open, translationally invariant spin chains with long-range interactions depending on both spin permutation and (polarized) spin reversal operators, which includes the Haldane-Shastry chain as a particular degenerate case. The new class is characterized by the fact that the Hamiltonian is invariant under “twisted” translations, combining an ordinary translation with a spin flip at one end of the chain. It includes a remarkable model with elliptic spin-spin interactions, smoothly interpolating between the XXX Heisenberg model with anti-periodic boundary conditions and a new open chain with sites uniformly spaced on a half-circle and interactions inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the spins. We are able to compute in closed form the partition function of the latter chain, thereby obtaining a complete description of its spectrum in terms of a pair of independent su(1|1) and su(m/2) motifs when the number m of internal degrees of freedom is even. This implies that the even m model is invariant under the direct sum of the Yangians Y (gl(1|1)) and Y (gl(0|m/2)). We also analyze several statistical properties of the new chain’s spectrum. In particular, we show that it is highly degenerate, which strongly suggests the existence of an underlying (twisted) Yangian symmetry also for odd m.

In the first part, we introduce the notion of fractional statistics in the sense of Haldane. We illustrate it on simple models related to anyon physics and to integrable models solvable by the Bethe ansatz. In the second part, we describe the properties of the long-range interacting spin chains. We describe its infinite dimensional symmetry, and we explain how the fractional statistics of its elementary excitations is an echo of this symmetry. In the third part, we review recent results on the Yangian representation theory which emerged from the study of the integrable long-range interacting models.
