Staggered-magnetization approach to spin-glasses

Abstract

A method is developed to solve the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick infinite-ranged spin-glass model, considering the staggered magnetizations associated with the eigenvalue spectrum of the random interaction matrix as the spin-glass order parameters. It is shown that the spin-glass ordering is not associated with a macroscopic condensation of eigenstates, but instead each of the $N$ eigenstates acquires, below ${T}_{c}$, nonzero magnetization of $O(1)$.

On the Infinite-Range-Ising-Spin-Glass Model

Petter Minnhagen

The infinite-range-Ising-spin-glass model is analysed using a new diagrammatic approach. The Sherrington-Kirkpatrick solution is regained in the paramagnetic region and the Bray-Moore soft mode is obtained in the spin-glass region. A possible order parameter characterizing the phase-transition at the Almeida-Thouless instability line is proposed.

Numerical simulations on spin glasses (invited)

A. P. Young

We discuss the results of numerical simulations of two spin-glass models, the infinite range Sherrington–Kirkpatrick (SK) model, and a nearest–neighbor model in three dimensions. The probability distribution PN(q) for the spin glass order parameter q has been evaluated for the SK model below Tc with N, the number of spins, up to 192. It shows the same basic features as the Parisi function dx/dq as expected, but with sizeable finite size corrections. Results for the short-range model show evidence for a finite temperature transition but further work is needed to confirm this.

Quantum Magnets with Anisotropic Infinite Range Random Interactions

Liliana Arrachea, Marcelo J. Rozenberg

Using exact diagonalization techniques we study the dynamical response of the anisotropic disordered Heisenberg model for systems of S=1/2 spins with infinite range random exchange interactions at temperature T=0. The model can be considered as a generalization, to the quantum case, of the well known Sherrington-Kirkpatrick classical spin-glass model. We also compute and study the behavior of the Edwards Anderson order parameter and energy per spin as the anisotropy evolves from the Ising to the Heisenberg limits.

On the relaxation of infinite-range spin glasses

A Scharnagl, Manfred Opper, Wolfgang Kinzel

The relaxation of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model for spin glasses is studied at low temperatures. A recently developed numerical method is used by which an infinitely large system is simulated, hence finite size effects are avoided. For parallel dynamics the decay of the energy as well as of the magnetization is investigated. For low temperatures we find evidence for a relaxation into a state which is characterized by non-equilibrium values of the energy and a non-vanishing remanent magnetization.

Is the Sherrington–Kirkpatrick model relevant for real spin glasses?

A. P. Young

I describe the results of numerical simulations which test whether the Sherrington–Kirkpatrick model, which was solved by Parisi, applies to short-range spin glasses. I conclude that it probably does for dimension d greater than 6, but there appear to be some differences in lower dimensions. In particular, there does not appear to be the line of transitions in a magnetic field (AT line) which is seen in the SK model.

Statics and dynamics of the infinite-range Ising spin glass model

N D Mackenzie, A. P. Young

The Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) spin glass model (1975) is studied by Monte Carlo simulation. Below T c there is a spectrum of relaxation times which diverge like exp(cN 1 4/) as N, the number of spins, tends to infinity. In zero field, h, there is one more timescale, tau eg , which is the time to turn over all the spins. Averaging over samples (ln tau eg ) j (=ln tau eg ) varies as N 1 2/. However, ln tau eg is not a self-averaging quantity and there are large sample-to-sample variations even for N to infinity . For h>>h*=T/N 1 2/, where T is the temperature, fluctuations on timescale tau eg may not occur. Above the Almeida-Thouless line (1978) relaxation times are finite and the SK solution is correct. Below this line, the results agree well with Parisi's theory (1983) if the latter is correctly interpreted.
