Phase separation dynamics of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in various optical trap shapes

Hitoshi Shibayama, Aki Torii, Kosuke Shibata +3 more

It is known theoretically and experimentally that multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates exhibit phase separation and form the spatial structure of spin domains [1], and expected to be a versatile source of intricate non-equilibrium pattern formation dynamics. The formation of various phase separation dynamics by varying potential shapes was theoretically predicted [2]. We investigate the dynamics of phase-separating two-component condensates in various optical trap shapes.

Excitation spectrum and phase separation of double Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

X. P. Liu

The excitation spectrum for symmetric two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BECs) in optical lattices is obtained, with emphasis on its quantitative dependence on intercomponent interaction parameter. The resulting two branches of the excitation spectrum have a linear spectrum asymptotically in the low momentum limit, which is expected as a behavior of superfluid. The critical superfluid velocity, depending on the intercomponent interaction parameter, is then obtained, which is quite different from the result obtained in other reference. A requirement of real excitation spectrum also results in a condition on the interaction parameters, which coincides with the phase separation condition. Hence in real spectrum excitation, it is proposed that there should be two branches of superfluid with different critical superfluid velocities, while in the complex spectrum it is predicted that there should be phase separation in the two-branch superfluid system. The excitation spectrum for an asymmetric two-component BEC system is also presented and analyzed.

Phase coherence and fragmentation of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in state-dependent optical lattices

Hyunoo Shim, Thomas H. Bergeman

A binary mixture of interacting Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in the presence of fragmentation-driving external lattice potentials forms two interdependent mean-field lattices made of each component. These effective mean-field lattices, like ordinary optical lattices, can induce additional fragmentation and phase coherence loss of BECs between lattice sites. In this study, we consider the nonequilibrium dynamics of two hyperfine states of one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates, subjected to state-dependent optical lattices. Our numerical calculations using the truncated Wigner approximation (TWA) show that phase coherence in a mixture of two-component BECs can be lost not just by optical lattices, but by mean-field lattices gradually formed by other components, and we reveal that such an effect of internal mean-field lattices, however, is limited, contrary to external optical lattices, in regard to phase decoherence.
