Abstract

Many-particle antisymmetric spin eigenstates are formulated in a manner that leads to simple expressions for expectation values of spin-independent many-particle operators. Explicit matrix elements are given for one- and two-particle operators.

Method for Simplifying Calculations Involving Products of Operators in Many-Particle Systems

Harry J. Lipkin

In calculations for quantum mechanical systems containing many particles, expressions involving matrix elements of products of operators are frequently encountered. This is of particular interest in the calculation of nuclear moments of inertia. The evaluation of such expressions by conventional methods is laborious when antisymmetric wave functions are used. A method is proposed which greatly simplifies the calculation of these product expressions.

Ising Correlations and Elliptic Determinants

N. Z. Iorgov, Nikolai Iorgov

Correlation functions of the two-dimensional Ising model on the periodic lattice can be expressed in terms of form factors — matrix elements of the spin operator in the basis of common eigenstates of the transfer matrix and translation operator. Free-fermion structure of the model implies that any multiparticle form factor is given by the pfaffian of a matrix constructed from the two-particle ones. Crossed two-particle form factors can be obtained by inverting a block of the matrix of linear transformation induced on fermions by the spin conjugation. We show that the corresponding matrix is of elliptic Cauchy type and use this observation to solve the inversion problem explicitly. Non-crossed two-particle form factors are then obtained using theta functional interpolation formulas. This gives a new simple proof of the factorized formulas for periodic Ising form factors, conjectured by A. Bugrij and one of the authors.

Diagrammatical Method for Geminals. I. Theory

Josef Paldus

A diagrammatical method, based on the second quantization formalism, time-independent Wick's theorem and Feynman-like diagrams, is developed for the calculation of arbitrary matrix elements of n-particle spin-independent operators between the states represented by antisymmetrized products of geminals of an arbitrary kind (i.e., strongly or weakly orthogonal, interacting, nonorthogonal or identical geminals). The method greatly facilitates any algebraic manipulation with geminal type functions, particularly when strong orthogonality is not assumed, and enables one to write down directly the algebraic expressions for the matrix elements of an arbitrary spin-independent operator between the single antisymmetrized products of arbitrary geminals, solely on the basis of simple graphs, which are easily constructed.

Sum rules for spin-$1/2$ quantum gases in well-defined-spin states: spin-independent interactions and spin-dependent external fields

Vladimir Yurovsky

Many-body eigenstates of spin-$1/2$ particles with defined total spins contain spin and spatial wavefunctions belonging to multidimensional irreducible representations of the symmetric group, unless the total spin has the maximal allowed value. Matrix elements in the basis of such eigenstates are analyzed for spin-dependent interactions with external fields and spin-independent ones between the particles. Analytical expressions are obtained for sums of the matrix elements and sums of their squared modules. The sum rules are applied to perturbative analysis of energy spectra.
