Determination of the relaxation constants of levels by the method of resonant interaction of two traveling waves with a two-level system

Abstract

A simple and accurate experimental method was developed for the determination of the relaxation constants of energy levels. The method was based on an investigation of the depth of nonlinear resonances in the gain profile resulting from the interaction between two traveling waves with a two-level system. The radiative widths and relaxation constants were obtained in the circular and linear polarization cases for the 3 s 2 , 3 p 2 , and 3 p 4 levels of Ne, and the probability of a transition from the 3 s 2 level to the ground state was determined.

Determination of the relaxation constants of a common level in resonance interaction of opposite waves with a three-level system

Yu. A. Vdovin, V. M. Ermachenko, I P Konovalov +1 more

An analysis is made of the method for measuring the relaxation constants of a common level in resonance interaction of two opposite traveling waves with a three-level system, based on the modulation of the polarization of one of the waves. The results for the 3 s 2 level of neon, obtained experimentally for the 3 s 2 –3 p 2 and 3 s 2 –3 p 4 transitions, were in agreement with the values obtained earlier by other methods.

Nonlinear interaction of two monochromatic fields at close frequencies inside an inhomogeneously broadened absorption line

E. Y. Opleukhin, T. V. Radina, Evald E. Fradkin

An experimental arrangement for determining the widths of levels is proposed, based on a theoretically developed model. A two-level medium is irradiated with a strong biharmonic electromagnetic field. The behavior of nonlinear absorption coefficients at frequencies of the incident field is studied. Equations are derived which give relative relaxation constants in terms of experimental data.

Observation of level degeneracy effect on interactions between traveling waves

Charles V. Shank, S. E. Schwarz

Measurements were made of the nonlinear interaction in a saturable absorber between two traveling waves of different planes of polarization. The experimental results indicate that the theory proposed by Dienes, which includes level degeneracies, correctly describes the nonlinear interaction.

Nonlinear resonances free of field and doppler broadenings

Yu. I. Belousov, Evgeniy V. Podivilov, М. Г. Степанов +1 more

For the case where the Rabi frequencies of the guiding fields are much larger than the relaxation constants but much smaller than the Doppler broadening, it is shown that resonances which are neither field nor Doppler broadened can appear in the absorption (or gain) spectrum of the probe field. A classification of four-level systems according to the number of resonances is made for cases where two strong fields interact either with opposite or adjoining transitions. The conditions under which the number of resonances reaches eight, while for stationary atoms the maximum number is four, are found. A method is proposed for calculating the number of resonances in a multilevel system with several strong fields using analysis of the extremum points of the frequency branches in the velocity-frequency plane.

Resonance interaction of a strong monochromatic wave with excited ions in a magnetic field

A. P. Kol'Chenko, Gennady I. Smirnov

A theoretical analysis is made of the influecne of a magnetic field on the gain of a monochromatic traveling-wave field in a medium composed of charged two-level particles (ions). An expression is obtained for the traveling-wave gain, allowing for the drift of ions and weak saturation. It is shown that the drift results in the asymmetry of the gain profile.

The Effect of Collisions on the Resonance Fluorescence Spectrum of Three-Level Atoms with a V-Configuration of Levels

А. И. Пархоменко, Anatolii M. Shalagin

The effect of collisions on the resonance fluorescence spectrum of three-level atoms with a V-configuration of levels when excited by two monochromatic resonance fields has been theoretically investigated. The analysis has been carried out for the systems with a small Doppler broadening compared to the collision frequency (high buffer gas pressures) and for the general case of an arbitrary change (from complete failure to complete preservation) of the phase memory at any of the three transitions in the V-system. It has been shown that in the three-level V-type atoms excited by two monochromatic fields, the resonant fluorescence spectrum (the number of spectral lines and their widths) at one of the transitions strongly depends on the presence of resonant radiation at the adjacent transition. Under certain conditions, the line widths will be completely determined by the relaxation characteristics of the adjacent transition and, in particular, can be repeatedly narrowed with an increase in the radiation intensity at the adjacent transition. It has been shown that despite the homogeneous nature of the broadening of the absorption lines, the resonance fluorescence spectrum has a pronounced anisotropy with respect to the mutual orientation of the wave vectors of spontaneous and exciting radiation. It has been established that the line widths in the resonance fluorescence spectrum are proportional to the diffusion coefficient of the atoms interacting with radiation under certain conditions. This fact can serve as the basis for a spectroscopic method for measuring the transport frequencies of the collisions of the radiation-absorbing particles with the buffer ones. It has been shown that the effects of phase memory in the collisions lead to a strong qualitative and quantitative modification of the resonance fluorescence spectrum.
