Cluster perturbation study of 1D electron–hole Hubbard model

Abstract

Abstract We studied the quarter‐filled electron–hole Hubbard model of one dimension using the cluster perturbation method. We found that the ground states of this system are always insulating as long as the electron–hole attractive interaction has a finite value. The calculated density of states for the electron and hole is significantly renormalized by the interaction, and show energy gaps at the Fermi energy. These gaps are induced by the excitonic mechanism at U > U ′ and by the biexcitonic one at U < U ′, where U (> 0) denotes the electron–electron and hole–hole repulsive interaction, and U ′(< 0) denotes the electron–hole attractive interaction. Optical Spectra and Exciton in Correlated Insulators in Electron–Hole Systems

Yuh Tomio, Tetsuo Ogawa

We study the optical properties of an electron–hole two-band Hubbard model with interactions of electron–electron (hole–hole) repulsion U and electron–hole attraction U '. In the case of two types of correlated insulators at half filling, viz. , the Mott–Hubbard type and the biexciton type, interband linear absorption/gain spectra including excitonic effects are calculated analytically using two-site dynamical mean-field theory and ladder approximation. We show that an exciton-like peak structure emerges because of an “exciton” in the sea of correlated fermions when U ' is larger than a certain critical value. The binding energy of the photoinduced excitonic bound state and the spectral intensity are evaluated as a function of U '. The emergence and absence of the exciton-like peak suggests that there are two different insulating mechanisms in the Mott–Hubbard insulating state of the electron–hole system: one is attributable to only U and the other is attributable to both U and U '; the latter is called the excitonic Mott–Hubbard insulating state. The intrinsic difference of the mechanisms cannot be captured from only single-particle properties such as the density of states, but it appears clearly in optical properties reflecting two-particle correlations.

Low-energy excitations of the one-dimensional half-filled SU(4) Hubbard model with an attractive on-site interaction: Density-matrix renormalization-group calculations and perturbation theory

Jize Zhao, Kazuo Ueda, Xiaoqun Wang

We investigate low-energy excitations of the one-dimensional half-filled SU(4) Hubbard model with an attractive on-site interaction $U<0$ using the density-matrix renormalization-group method as well as perturbation theory. We find that the ground state is a charge-density-wave state with long-range order. The ground state is completely incompressible since all the excitations are gapful. The charge gap, which is the same as the four-particle excitation gap, is a nonmonotonic function of $U$, while the spin gap and others increase with increasing $\ensuremath{\mid}U\ensuremath{\mid}$ and have linear asymptotic behaviors.

The properties of the CDW phase in the weak coupling anharmonic Holstein–Hubbard model

Przemysław R. Grzybowski

Abstract The anharmonic Holstein–Hubbard Hamiltonian in the case of weak effective electron–electron attraction is studied. To deal with anharmonicity of phonons, variational canonical transformations are used to derive an effective electron Hamiltonian. The properties of the charge density wave (CDW) phase, for half‐filling, are analyzed using this effective Hamiltonian. In particular, the critical temperatures, gap function, order parameter and gap ratio are calculated. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Fermion Coherent State Studies of One-Dimensional Hubbard Model

Ji Lin, Gao Xianlong, Wang Ke-Lin

We present a comparative study of the ground state of the one-dimensional Hubbard model. We first use a new fermion coherent state method in the framework of Fermi liquid theory by introducing a hole operator and considering the interactions of two pairs electrons and holes. We construct the ground state of the Hubbard model as ∣⟩ = [ f +∑'φ c † k 1 σ 1 h † k 2 σ 2 c † k 3 σ 3 h † k 4 σ 4 ∏exp(ρ c † k 1 σ 1 h † k 2 σ 2 )]∣⟩ 0 , where φ and ρ are the coupling constants. Our results are then compared to those of variational methods, density functional theory based on the exact solvable Bethe ansatz solutions, variational Monto–Carlo method (VMC) as well as to the exact result of the infinite system. We find satisfactory agreement between the fermion coherent state scheme and the VMC data, and provide a new picture to deal with the strongly correlated system.

Ground state of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model

N. I. Chashchin

We investigate the ground state (T = 0 K) of the one-dimensional symmetrical (n = 1) Hubbard model formalized in terms of the system of integral equations, which we previously obtained using the method of the generating functional of Green’s functions with the subsequent Legendre transformation. In a wide range of variations in the parameter of Coulomb interaction U, the following characteristics of the system have been calculated: the electron density of states, the electron band spectrum, the number of doubly occupied lattice sites, the localized magnetic moment, the correlator of the square of the longitudinal component of spin at a site,<S Z 2>, and the internal energy of the system. It has been shown that, for all U > 0, the model yields two solutions, i.e., an antiferromagnetic insulator and a paramagnetic insulator, in which there are no single-electron quasi-particles at the Fermi level. The energy of the paramagnetic solution in the region of U < 1.1 is considerably less than that of the antiferromagnetic solution for the case of U > 1.1, we have the opposite situation.

Bound states in the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model

M. Bąk

Abstract The paper shows how the known, exact results for the two electron bound states can modify the ground state phase diagram of extended Hubbard model (EHM) for on‐site attraction, intersite repulsion and arbitrary electron density. The main result is suppression of the superconducting state in favor of normal phase for small charge densities. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
