Abstract

The exactly solvable model with fermion boson coupling proposed by Sch"utte and Da Providencia is considered with spontaneously broken symmetry within the so-called self-consistent random phase approximation. Encouraging results for ground and excited states are obtained. A possible extension of the present approach is discussed.

Self-consistent random phase approximation in the Schütte–Da Providencia fermion-boson model

Aziz Rabhi

The self-consistent random phase approximation (SCRPA) is applied to the exactly solvable model with fermion-boson coupling proposed by Sch\"utte and Da Providencia. Very encouraging results in comparison with the exact solution of the model for various observables are obtained. The transition from the normal phase to the phase with a spontaneously broken symmetry is carefully investigated. The strong reduction of the variance in SCRPA vs Hartree-Fock is pointed out.

Symmetry breaking in self-consistent models: Lessons from an exactly solvable many-fermion model

Emil V. Prodan

This work presents a many-fermion Hamiltonian with the following properties: 1) is exactly solvable, 2) has a second order insulator-metal quantum phase transition, 3) has a well defined mean field approximation and 4) its mean-field ground state displays a liquid-solid transition. The phenomenon of symmetry breaking in fermionic self-consistent models is discussed in the light of these remarkable properties of the many-body model.

Self-consistent random-phase approximation from a coupled-cluster wave function perspective

Mohsen Jemaï, Doru Sabin Delion, Peter Schuck

Self-consistent random-phase approximation is rederived in a consistent way with the help of the coupled cluster ground state wave function truncated at the two-body level. An exact killing operator for this wave function is introduced allowing for a detailed discussion of the approximation scheme. Several exactly solvable models are reanalyzed under this new perspective giving rise to a quantitative evaluation of the performances of this many-body method.

Random Phase Approximation and Extensions Applied to a Bosonic Field Theory

Hubert Hansen, Guy Chanfray, D. Davesne +1 more

An application of a self-consistent version of RPA to quantum field theory with broken symmetry is presented. Although our approach can be applied to any bosonic field theory, we specifically study the $ϕ^4$ theory in 1+1 dimensions. We show that standard RPA approach leads to an instability which can be removed when going to a superior version,i.e. the renormalized RPA. We present a method based on the so-called charging formula of the many electron problem to calculate the correlation energy and the RPA effective potential.

Self-consistent and renormalized particle-particle random phase approximation in a schematic model

E. J. V. de Passos, A. F. R. de Toledo Piza, Francisco Krmpotić

The dynamical effects of ground state correlations for excitation energies and transition strengths near the superfluid phase transition are studied in the soluble two level pairing model, in the context of the particle-particle self-consistent random phase approximation (SCRPA). Exact results are well reproduced across the transition region, beyond the collapse of the standard particle-particle random phase approximation. The effects of two-body correlation in the SCRPA are displayed explicitly.

Random-phase approximation and broken symmetry

E. D. D. Davis, W. D. Heiss

The validity of the random-phase approximation (RPA) in broken-symmetry bases is tested in an appropriate many-body system for which exact solutions are available. Initially the regions of stability of the self-consistent quasiparticle bases in this system are established and depicted in a 'phase' diagram. It is found that only stable bases can be used in an RPA calculation. This is particularly true for those RPA modes which are not associated with the onset of instability of the basis; the authors see that these modes do not describe any excited state when the basis is unstable, although from a formal point of view they remain acceptable. The RPA does well in a stable broken-symmetry basis provided one is not too close to a point where a phase transition occurs. This is true for both energies and matrix elements.
