Accurate and efficient evolution of nonlinear Schrödinger equations

Abstract

A numerical method is given for affecting nonlinear Schr\"odinger evolution on an initial wave function, applicable to a wide range of problems, such as time-dependent Hartree, Hartree-Fock, density-functional, and Gross-Pitaevskii theories. The method samples the evolving wave function at Chebyshev quadrature points of a given time interval. This achieves an optimal degree of representation. At these sampling points, an implicit equation, representing an integral Schr\"odinger equation, is given for the sampled wave function. Principles and application details are described, and several examples and demonstrations of the method and its numerical evaluation on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate are shown.

A unified construction of variational methods for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Yeongji Kim, Alexander L. Zubarev

Based on an approach introduced by Gerjuoy, Rau, and Spruch, we construct variational principles in a systematic way for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and obtain new variational principles for the case of Ginzburg-Pitaevskii-Gross equation (GPG) which is believed to describe accurately the Bose-Einstein condensation at zero temperature. As an application of these variational methods, a variational iteration method is proposed for calculating eigenvalue (chemical potential) and wave function for the GPG equation 1.

Bose–Einstein condensate wave function and nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Viktor Borisovich Bobrov, S. A. Trigger

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the ground-state wave function of an inhomogeneous boson system is derived in the self-consistent Hartree–Fock approximation without the use of the formalism of anomalous averages. The results obtained correspond to the Gross–Pitaevskii equation for the Bose–Einstein condensate wave function when using the delta-shaped boson interaction potential.

Spectral method for the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic trap

Claude M. Dion, Eric Cancès B

We study the numerical resolution of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, a nonlinear Schrödinger equation used to simulate the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates. Considering condensates trapped in harmonic potentials, we present an efficient algorithm by making use of a spectral-Galerkin method, using a basis set of harmonic-oscillator functions, and the Gauss-Hermite quadrature. We apply this algorithm to the simulation of condensate breathing and scissor modes.

Gross–Pitaevskii dynamics for Bose–Einstein condensates

Christian Brennecke, Benjamin Schlein

We study the time-evolution of initially trapped Bose-Einstein condensates in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. Under a physically motivated assumption on the energy of the initial data, we show that condensation is preserved by the many-body evolution and that the dynamics of the condensate wave function can be described by the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. With respect to previous works, we provide optimal bounds on the rate of condensation (i.e. on the number of excitations of the Bose-Einstein condensate). To reach this goal, we combine the method of \cite{LNS}, where fluctuations around the Hartree dynamics for $N$-particle initial data in the mean-field regime have been analyzed, with ideas from \cite{BDS}, where the evolution of Fock-space initial data in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime has been considered.

Bose-Einstein condensation dynamics from the numerical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

Sadhan K. Adhikari, Paulsamy Muruganandam

We study certain stationary and time-evolution problems of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates using the numerical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with both spherical and axial symmetries. We consider time-evolution problems initiated by suddenly changing the interatomic scattering length or harmonic trapping potential in a stationary condensate. These changes introduce oscillations in the condensate which are studied in detail. We use a time iterative split-step method for the solution of the time-dependent GP equation, where all nonlinear and linear non-derivative terms are treated separately from the time propagation with the kinetic energy terms. Even for an arbitrarily strong nonlinear term this leads to extremely accurate and stable results after millions of time iterations of the original equation.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates: Variational solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations

Víctor M. Pérez‐García, Humberto Michinel, J. I. Cirac +2 more

A variational technique is applied to solve the time-dependent nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (Gross-Pitaevskii equation) with the goal to model the dynamics of dilute ultracold atom clouds in the Bose-Einstein condensed phase. We derive analytical predictions for the collapse, equilibrium widths, and evolution laws of the condensate parameters and find them to be in very good agreement with our numerical simulations of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. It is found that not only the number of particles, but also both the initial width of the condensate and the effect of different perturbations to the condensate may play a crucial role in the collapse dynamics. The results are applicable when the shape of the condensate is sufficiently simple.
