The focus of the study is the free quantum evolution of Duffing oscillators which are nonlinearly coupled to bosonic environments. The work evolves from a particular system of an undamped, nonlinear graphene resonator mode to a more generalized framework of oscillator modes interacting with two different configurations of bosonic environments. In a model with no dissipation, the nonlinear Duffing oscillator allows an initial coherent state to evolve into a macroscopic superposition state, a Schrödinger Cat state. By further subjecting a Duffing mode to nonlinear damping, the parity conservation due to the two-quanta system-bath exchange, brings the system to a nonclassical steady state - an equilibrium state very much different from the ground state. The quantum features of this state are analysed for temperatures above zero and in a more realistic scenario where the interplay of linear and nonlinear decay is taken into account. The scope of the study is then extended to bipartite systems of nonlinear interacting oscillators, each nonlinearly coupled to a bosonic environment. The generation of entanglement in initially separable states and entanglement's asymptotic behaviour are investigated. One of the outcomes is the Duffing nonlinearity not affecting the entanglement asymptote. Therefore, finally a bipartite system of harmonic oscillators, with nonlinear system-bath coupling is initiated with entangled, squeezed states, and the asymptotic behaviour is evaluated in the parameter space of temperature, squeezing and dissipation rate. This is done for common and individual reservoir configurations, and either zero or non-zero inter-mode coupling.
We study the effect of the intermode coupling in the generation of coherence when two bosonic modes are bilinearly coupled. We consider the case for which the two modes are weakly coupled and the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) applies and the case for which they are strongly coupled and the RWA does not apply. Then, in the regime of validity of the RWA, there is no coherence generation solely due to squeezing effects, which means there is an exchange of excitation between the modes and negligible squeezing. On the other hand, if the two modes are strongly coupled coherence is generated by the squeezing interaction. For the system of two bosonic modes weakly coupled with a Markovian bath at temperature
T the coherence decreases with
T. In general, when both kinds of couplings (exchange of excitation and squeezing) are turned on the exchange of excitation contributes to generating more coherence in comparison with a purely squeezing coupling. Thus, the coherence decreases more slowly with the temperature when both couplings are present. Finally, we explore the case when only one of the two coupled modes interacts with a Markovian bath while the other one remains free from the environment. We observe that the intermode coupling induces oscillations in the coherence and fidelity dynamics similar to the behavior for the coupling with a non-Markovian environment.
We describe the generation of quantum correlations (entanglement, discord and steering) in a system composed of two coupled non-resonant bosonic modes immersed in a common thermal reservoir, in the framework of the theory of open systems. We show that for separable initial squeezed thermal states entanglement generation may take place, for definite values of squeezing parameter, average photon numbers, temperature of the thermal bath, dissipation constant and strength of interaction between the two bosonic modes. We also show that for initial uni-modal squeezed states Gaussian discord can be generated for all non-zero values of the strength of interaction between the modes. Likewise, for an initial separable state, a generation of Gaussian steering may take place temporarily, for definite values of the parameters characterizing the initial state and the thermal environment, and the strength of coupling between the two modes.
Interesting new correlation and unidirectional properties of two bosonic modes under the influence of environment appear when the modes are mutually coupled through the simultaneously applied linear mode-hopping and nonlinear squeezing interactions. Under such double coupling, it is found that while the Hamiltonian of the system is clearly Hermitian the dynamics of the quadrature components of the field operators can be attributed to non-Hermicity of the system. It is manifested in an asymmetric coupling between the quadrature components which then leads to a variety of remarkable features. In particular, we identify how the emerging exceptional point controls the conversion of thermal states of the modes into single-mode classically or quantum squeezed states. Furthermore, for reservoirs being in squeezed states, we find that the two-photon correlations present in these reservoirs are responsible for unidirectional flow of populations and correlations among the modes and the flow can be controlled by appropriate tuning of the mutual orientation of the squeezed noise ellipses. In the course of analyzing these effects we find that the flow of the population creates the first-order coherence between the modes which, on the other hand rules out an enhancement of the two photon correlations responsible for entanglement between the modes. These results suggest new alternatives for the creation of single mode squeezed fields and the potential applications for controlled unidirectional transfer of population and correlations in bosonic chains.
