Abstract

The transverse structure of extremely short pulses propagating in two-level off-resonance medium in more than one space dimension is examined. The consideration based on the averaged Lagrangian method. The approximate solution of nonlinear wave equation in form of multidimensional stationary localized soliton-like pulse is found.

Dynamics of ultimately short pulses in partially absorbing media

С. В. Сазонов, A. F. Sobolevskii

Propagation of broad-band ultimately short light pulses in a partially absorbing medium is analyzed in the framework of the three-level model. Nonlinear wave equations are obtained describing propagation of light pulses in media with quadratic (all three transitions are allowed) or cubic (one of the transitions is forbidden) nonlinearity in the range of optical transparency or with the sine-Gordon-type nonlinearity in the region of absorption. Using the averaged variational principle, the approximate solutions of equations in the form of unipolar soliton-like signals are found and conditions of their transverse stability are determined. A stable propagation of a broad-band pulse is shown to be possible under conditions when monochromatic signals exhibit self-focusing.

Optical Solitons in Media with Resonant and Non-resonant Self-focusing Nonlinearities

Evgeny V. Doktorov, R. A. Vlasov

Special features of generating a self-induced transparency in a medium with both resonant and non-resonant (Kerr-type) nonlinearities are considered. Soliton solutions of the Maxwell-Bloch equations are found, taking into account the diffraction divergence of the light beam. It is shown that solitons emerge in such a medium under conditions of two-dimensional optical beam scanning along the medium surface, and have non-coinciding propagating directions of the amplitude and phase fronts. As a necessary condition for the existence of solitons, there is a definite relationship between the scanning velocity and the parameters of the medium and radiation.

Self-focusing and defocusing of self-similar π pulses in an amplifying two-level medium

M. B. Krylov, С. В. Сазонов

The effect of transverse perturbations on the propagation of electromagnetic π pulses in an amplifying two-level medium is studied. The cases of quasi-monochromatic and extremely short pulses are considered. The equations describing the behavior of the transverse size of the pulse during its propagation in the medium are derived. It is shown that, if the ratios of the diffraction length to the length of dispersion spreading are smaller than certain critical values, self-focusing regimes are realized for both types of pulses. Otherwise, at a finite distance, blowup of defocusing occurs, after which the amplified pulse propagates as if it is a one-dimensional pulse, with the velocity equal to the velocity of light in vacuum. Similarities and distinctions in the dynamics of propagation of extremely short and quasi-monochromatic pulses are indicated.

Diffractive effects in pulse propagation through a resonant medium

Sudhakar Prasad, Roy J. Glauber

The propagation of a weak optical pulse through a resonant two-level atomic medium is discussed in the paraxial approximation. Transverse propagation effects within that approximation are treated exactly by development of the method of Fresnel transforms. In particular, for a temporally short pulse with an amplitude of arbitrary transverse spatial dependence it is shown that longitudinal propagation is not affected by diffractive spreading. Thus diffraction does not attenuate the characteristic ringing of one-dimensional pulse propagation in resonant media.

Faster-than-light propagation of electromagnetic solitons in nonequilibrium medium taking account of diffraction

A. N. Bugay, С. В. Сазонов

In this work the faster-than-light propagation taking account of diffraction of ultimately short electromagnetic video solitons and envelope solitons in a bicomponent nonequilibrium medium undergoing two-level quantum transitions with widely differing eigenfrequencies is examined. The conditions of stable propagation with respect to self-focusing are determined.

Models for optical solitons in the two-cycle regime

Hervé Leblond, François Sanchez

We derive model equations for optical pulse propagation in a medium described by a two-level Hamiltonian, without the use of the slowly varying envelope approximation. Assuming that the resonance frequency of the two-level atoms is either well above or well below the inverse of the characteristic duration of the pulse, we reduce the propagation problem to a modified Korteweg--de Vries or a sine-Gordon equation. We exhibit analytical solutions of these equations which are rather close in shape and spectrum to pulses in the two-cycle regime produced experimentally, which shows that soliton-type propagation of the latter can be envisaged.
