Abstract

Spin-dynamical calculations on one-dimensional systems have relied heavily on classical ($s=\ensuremath{\infty}$) theories, despite abundant evidence that quantum effects can be extremely important at low temperatures. We present a new approach to the spin dynamics of the one-dimensional isotropic $s=\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (HB AF) which does not involve the many-body techniques usually employed. It is based on analytic Bethe ansatz calculations of excitation energies and densities of states combined with finite-chain calculations of matrix elements. An important feature of our method is the use of rigorous selection rules and the introduction of new selection rules, which are valid for macroscopic systems in a magnetic field. We show that in zero field the dynamical two-spin correlation function ${S}_{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\mu}}(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ at $T=0$ is governed by a two-parameter continuum of spin-wave-type excitations. In nonzero field, the longitudinal component ${S}_{\mathrm{zz}}(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ and the transverse components ${S}_{\mathrm{xx}}(q,\ensuremath{\omega})\ensuremath{\equiv}{S}_{\mathrm{yy}}(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ behave quite differently because they are dominated by different continua of excitations. The former is characterized by a lowest excitation branch with a zero-frequency mode moving from the zone boundary ($q=\ensuremath{\pi}$) towards the zone center ($q=0$) as the field increases, whereas the latter is characterized by a lowest branch with a zero frequency mode moving from $q=0 \mathrm{to} \ensuremath{\pi}$ with increasing field. The first part of our work features an approximate analytic expression for ${S}_{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\mu}}(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ at zero temperature and in zero field. Although our expression is not rigorous, exact sum rules are violated only by a small amount, and good agreement exists with the few known exact results. Our studies are extended to nonzero temperatures by placing major reliance on exact finite-chain calculations. Our work was stimulated by recent neutron scattering experiments and is oriented towards experimental comparisons. Our result for the $s=\frac{1}{2}$ integrated intensity is in much better agreement with neutron scattering data on Cu${\mathrm{Cl}}_{2}$\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}2N(${\mathrm{C}}_{5}$${\mathrm{D}}_{5}$) (CPC) than the corresponding semiclassical result. Moreover, the spectral-weight distribution in ${S}_{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\mu}}(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ shows increasing asymmetry as $q\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\pi}$, a quantum effect, again in agreement with more recent neutron scattering data. The second part of our work deals with the effects of an applied magnetic field. We extend the analytic work of Ishimura and Shiba to obtain expressions for the energies and densities of states of the various excitation continua. It is shown that these continua are expected to give rise to multiple structures in the scattering intensity. Our results appear to be in quantitative agreement with preliminary results of a neutron study in CPC in a field of 70 kOe, revealing anomalous scattering intensity peaks. Our results repeatedly demonstrate the inadequacy of classical spin-wave theory for this problem. They call for additional experimental studies on quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets to examine other unusual and interesting phenomena predicted by our approach.

Quantum spin dynamics of the one-dimensional planar antiferromagnet

Gerhard Müller, H. Thomas, M. W. Puga +1 more

The T=0 dynamics of the one-dimensional s= 1 / 2 planar antiferromagnet is studied by an approach which consists of exact analytic calculations in the Bethe formalism and numerical finite-chain calculations on rings up to 10 spins. The method makes use of well known critical exponents for the correlation functions and of exact sum rules. The authors obtain approximate analytic expressions for both the out-of-plane and the in-plane dynamic structure factors, and for related quantities such as integrated intensities, susceptibilities and autocorrelation functions. The results are discussed in relation to possible experiments on quasi-1D magnetic compounds at low T. The calculations make clear that the T=0 dynamic structure factors are dominated by two-parameter continua of excitations rather than by single branches of spin-waves as predicted by classical spin-wave theory. By varying the planar anisotropy the autocorrelation functions display interesting features in their longtime asymptotic behaviour, such as a crossover from a uniform power-law decay to an oscillatory decay and a crossover between oscillatory decays with different frequencies. They conjecture a possibility of approaching the classical limit s= infinity starting from the quantum limit s= 1 / 2 . This provides a qualitative, and in some aspects even quantitative, understanding of the dynamical behaviour of s> 1 / 2 systems in terms of a quantum approach.

Line-shape predictions via Bethe ansatz for the one-dimensional spin- 12 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field

Michael Karbach, Gerhard H. Muller

The spin fluctuations parallel to the external magnetic field in the ground state of the one-dimensional (1D) $s=\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet are dominated by a two-parameter set of collective excitations. In a cyclic chain of N sites and magnetization $0<{M}_{z}<N/2,$ the ground state, which contains ${2M}_{z}$ spinons, is reconfigured as the physical vacuum for a different species of quasiparticles, identifiable in the framework of the coordinate Bethe ansatz by characteristic configurations of Bethe quantum numbers. The dynamically dominant excitations are found to be scattering states of two such quasiparticles. For $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\infty},$ these collective excitations form a continuum in $(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ space with an incommensurate soft mode. Their matrix elements in the dynamic spin structure factor ${S}_{\mathrm{zz}}(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ are calculated directly from the Bethe wave functions for finite N. The resulting line- shape predictions for $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\infty}$ complement the exact results previously derived via algebraic analysis for the exact two-spinon part of ${S}_{\mathrm{zz}}(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ in the zero-field limit. They are relevant for neutron-scattering experiments on quasi-1D antiferromagnetic compounds in a strong magnetic field.

Dynamics of the s=12 linear Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field: Experiment and theory

J. P. Groen, Tjeerd O. Klaassen, N.J. Poulis +3 more

Proton spin-lattice relaxation times have been measured in the quasi-one-dimensional $s=\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic compounds CuSe${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}5${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$O and CuS${\mathrm{O}}_{4}$\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}5${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$O, in order to study the magnetic field dependence of the 1D quantum spin dynamics at various temperatures. Information is obtained on the low-frequency behavior of the spin autocorrelation functions for the linear chains. The transverse component shows at high $T$ a marked decrease with magnetic field above the saturation field ${B}_{c}$. Towards lower temperatures a pronounced maximum just below ${B}_{c}$ develops and the decrease above ${B}_{c}$ becomes more abrupt. The longitudinal component behaves more smoothly near and above ${B}_{c}$. The field dependence of the relaxation rates is well explained at all nonzero temperatures by finite-chain calculations. For $T=0$ we present analytical calculations of autocorrelation functions based on the predominance of a two-parameter spin-wave continuum for the quantum spin dynamics yielding a nondivergent behavior at $\ensuremath{\omega}=0$ and $B=0$. Exact results are obtained for fields above ${B}_{c}$. Further, an effective $\mathrm{XY}$ approach is used for low but finite $T$. Here, good agreement is found with the proton relaxation data for very low temperatures.

Study of the excited states of the quantum antiferromagnets

Mohammad G. Merdan

We investigate the quantum dynamics of the spins on different Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin lattice systems. Firstly, we applied the coupled-cluster method to the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic \emph{XXZ} model on a square lattice by employing an approximation which contains two-body long-range correlations and high-order four-body local correlations. Improvement is found for the ground-state energy, sublattice magnetization, and the critical anisotropy when comparing with the approximation including the two-body correlations alone. We also obtain the full excitation spectrum which is in good agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo results and the high-order spin-wave theory.Secondly, we study the longitudinal excitations of quantum antiferromagnets on a triangular lattice by a recently proposed microscopic many-body approach based on magnon-density waves. We calculate the full longitudinal excitation spectra of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model for a general spin quantum number in the isotropic limit. Similar to the square lattice model, we find that, at the center of the first hexagonal Brillouin zone $\Gamma(\mathbf q=0)$ and at the magnetic ordering wavevectors $\pm[\mathbf Q= (4\pi/3,0)]$, the excitation spectra become gapless in the thermodynamic limit, due to the slow, logarithmic divergence of the structure factor. However, these longitudinal modes on two-dimensional models may be considered as quasi-gapped, as any finite-size effect or small anisotropy will induce a large energy gap, when compared with the counterpart of the transverse spin-wave excitations. We have also investigated the excited states of the quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets on hexagonal lattices, including the longitudinal modes based on the magnon-density waves. A model Hamiltonian with a uniaxial single-ion anisotropy is first studied by a spin-wave theory based on the one-boson method; the ground state thus obtained is employed for the study of the longitudinal modes. The full energy spectra of both the transverse modes (i.e., magnons) and the longitudinal modes are obtained as functions of the nearest-neighbor coupling and the anisotropy constants. We have found two longitudinal modes due to the non-collinear nature of the triangular antiferromagnetic order, similar to that of the phenomenological field theory approach by Affleck. The excitation energy gaps due to the anisotropy and the energy gaps of the longitudinal modes without anisotropy are then investigated. We then compares our results for the longitudinal energy gaps at the magnetic wavevectors with the experimental results for several antiferromagnetic compounds with both integer and non-integer spin quantum numbers, and we find good agreements after the higher-order contributions are included in our calculations.

Quantum effects in the spin dynamics of the linear Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Gerhard H. Muller, Hans Beck, Jill C. Bonner

We present an approximate analytic expression for the dynamical spin correlation function of the S=1/2 linear Heisenberg antiferromagnet at T=0. The basis for our approach is that in zero field the spectrum is dominated by a double continuum [in (q,ω) -space] of triplet spin wave excitations. The S=1/2 integrated intensity agrees very well with recent neutron scattering results on CPC, unlike the corresponding classical intensity. Moreover, the S=1/2 spectral weight function shows increasing asymmetry as q→π, a quantum effect, observable in more recent neutron scattering data. In non-zero magnetic field, there exist two, partly overlapping, double continua, each giving rise to a peak situated at the lower boundary. The (zz component of) spectral weight function therefore has a double-peaked structure, as observed experimentally. Theory and experiment are in apparent agreement concerning the energy difference between the peaks.

Anisotropic heisenberg quantum spin chains: excitations and neutron-scattering cross sections

Leonard Patrick English

The research presented here focuses on the theoretical investigation of spinons in quasi one-dimensional quantum spin chains from the perspective of neutron scattering, with emphasis placed on the calculation of dynamic spin structure factors for both unpolarised and polarised incident neutrons. Two anisotropic versions of the Heisenberg spin chain are considered for such an examination: the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic $XXZ$ model and the spin-$1/2$ ferromagnetic $XYZ$ model. The $XYZ$ model supports spinon scattering (modelled at finite temperature) and is related to the so-called Villain mode. The introduction of a perturbation in the form of an external transverse magnetic field or Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) leads to the emergence of incommensurability in the system; such a result is a signature of fractional excitations. The presence of these interactions also give rise to a chiral response associated with the spinons in the polarised term of the scattering cross section. The inelastic scattering cross section is computed for both unpolarised and polarised neutrons. In relation to the antiferromagnetic $XXZ$ model, emphasis is on spinon pair creation (modelled at $T = 0 {rm K}$). Motivated by the presence of a chiral response in the case of the $XYZ$ model mentioned above, a new technique is developed in order to incorporate DMI and the transverse magnetic field so that one can determine if there is a chiral property associated with the two-spinon system. This technique is numerical in nature and is based on Green function methods. Using the results produced by the Green function approach, the inelastic cross section in the presence of an external transverse magnetic field is computed for the first time. The result is compared with experimental neutron scattering data; good agreement is demonstrated between theory and experiments on ${rm CsCoBr}_3$.Finally, the Green function approach is generalised to account for the interactions between spin chains in magnetic compounds described by a staggered field. Various dynamic structure factors are computed for this scenario with results compared to experiment; good agreement between the theory and experiments on ${rm RbCoCl}_3$ is shown.
