Abstract

Equations are derived which describe the dynamics of three-level atoms with a Λ level scheme, interacting with two coherent resonance fields under conditions such that cooperative relaxation predominates over incoherent spontaneous emission. A numerical calculation of the temporal dynamics of the values of the atomic populations is performed. It is shown that coherent population trapping in the presence of cooperative decay is possible. The quantities characterizing this phenomenon are calculated—the width of the black line and the transition time to coherent trapping in this scheme.

Cooperative dynamics of an ensemble of atoms with Λ-scheme of levels driven by two resonant laser fields

I. A. Grigorenko, Boris G. Matisov

We derive the equations describing the dynamics of an ensemble of atoms with (Lambda) - scheme of levels driven by two coherent resonant fields in a case when cooperative relaxation prevails over usual incoherent spontaneous emission. We investigate numerically temporal dynamics of mean values of the collective atomic operators. When the two-photon resonance condition is fulfilled then all atoms tend to be trapped in a coherent dark state, so coherent population trapping arises in a case of cooperative decay. Most important values characterizing this phenomenon such as the width of the black line and the time of initial transient stage of evolution are evaluated.

Coherent population trapping in an ensemble of three-level atoms in the presence of cooperative relaxation

Boris G. Matisov, I. A. Grigorenko, I. E. Mazets

We derive equations that describe the dynamics of three-level atoms with a cascade system of levels interacting with two resonant coherent fields in conditions where cooperative relaxation dominates over incoherent spontaneous emission. We calculate the temporal dynamics of the values of the atomic populations. The possibility of coherent population trapping in the presence of the cooperative decay is established. Finally, we calculate the averaged population of the intermediate level as a function of detuning for different values of the coupling constant.

Suppression of coherent population trapping upon spontaneous decay of an excited state

V. M. Datsyuk, Boris G. Matisov, Igor M. Sokolov

The interaction of a model three-level Λ system with electromagnetic radiation is considered under the conditions where a coherence (an off-diagonal matrix element) between lower sublevels arises upon spontaneous decay of an excited state. The cases of bichromatic and incoherent broadband fields are analyzed. It is shown that the occurrence of coherence may significantly change the character of evolution of the system under study with time. These changes are most pronounced for broadband fields. Some features of this phenomenon are considered for multilevel atomic systems.

Cooperative emission from an ensemble of three-level Λ radiators in a cavity: An insight from the viewpoint of dynamics of nonlinear systems

Igor Viktorovich Ryzhov, N. A. Vasil’ev, I. S. Kosova +2 more

Cooperative radiation emitted by an ensemble of three-level optical systems with a doublet in the ground state (Λ scheme), which is placed into a cyclic cavity, is studied theoretically. In contrast to the two-level model of emitters, this process with such a configuration of operating transitions may occur without population inversion in the whole, if the doublet is prepared at the initial instant in a superposition (coherent) state. In the ideal case of a Hamilton system, in which the cavity losses and relaxation in the radiator ensemble are disregarded, the conservation laws are derived, which allow a substantial reduction of the dimension of the phase space of the model (ℝ 11 → ℝ 5 ) and the application of methods of dynamics of nonlinear systems for analyzing the three-level superradiance under these conditions. The possibility of different (both quasiperiodic and chaotic) scenarios of the three-level superradiance is demonstrated on the basis of Poincaré’s mappings. Global bifurcation of the system upon a transition from the conventional superradiance regime to inversionless one is revealed. The effects of cavity losses, as well as homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening in the system of radiators on the regularities found are also discussed.

Steady-state behavior in atomic three-level Λ and ladder systems with incoherent population pumping

M. Blaauboer

We study the steady state in three-level lambda (\ensuremath{\Lambda}) and ladder systems. It is well known that in a \ensuremath{\Lambda} system this steady state is the coherent population trapping state, independent of the presence of spontaneous emission. In contrast, the steady state in a ladder system is in general not stable against radiative decay and exhibits a minimum in the population of the ground state. We show that incoherent population pumping destroys the stability of the coherent population trapping state in the \ensuremath{\Lambda} system and suppresses a previously discovered sharp dip in the steady-state response. In the ladder system the observed minimum disappears in the presence of an incoherent pump on the upper transition.

Coherent population trapping in a Λ configuration coupled by magnetic dipole interactions

Huidong Kim, Hyok Sang Han, Tai Hyun Yoon +1 more

We report our study on coherent population trapping (CPT) in a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ configuration coupled by magnetic dipole interactions. The $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ configuration is formed by bichromatic radio-frequency fields coupling a pair of Zeeman sublevels in one hyperfine level of an alkali-metal atom to another sublevel in the other hyperfine level. The Zeeman sublevel at the apex is coupled to a state in the $nP$ manifold via an optical transition on one of the spectroscopic $D$ lines to induce optical pumping to a dark state. The configuration is closed without leakage to other Zeeman sublevels. We use lithium atoms in an optical trap for our experimental study. The system allows independent control of the main parameters characterizing CPT, which include the upper-state decay rate and the decoherence rate as well as the Rabi frequencies. By turning off the applied fields, the system is frozen so that its quantum state can be measured precisely. We studied the line shapes and dynamics of the CPT system, and measured the phase relation of the dark superposition state to find excellent agreement with theory. The possible application of the scheme as a method to cool optically trapped atoms below the recoil limit in a manner analogous to velocity-selective coherent population trapping is discussed.
