Abstract

We present a study of the antiferromagnetic Potts model in two and three dimensions, using a new method of Monte Carlo simulations, which enables us to perform simulations with greatly improved efficiency. Illustrating the method for the three-state model, we have obtained new results for the entropy and critical exponents in two and three dimensions. The low-temperature phase in three dimensions is shown to have long-range order with a finite-size dependence similar to that of the XY model.

We present a study of the three-state antiferromagnetic Potts model in two and three dimensions, using a cluster-flip Monte Carlo simulation algorithm. The new approach enables us to perform simulations with greatly improved efficiency. We have obtained results for the ground-state entropy and critical exponents in two and three dimensions. The low-temperature phase in three dimensions is shown to have long-range order with a finite-size dependence of the magnetization and susceptibility similar to that of the XY model.

Critical Properties of Antiferromagnetic Potts Model on a bcc Lattice

Djuma R. Kurbanova, A. K. Murtazaev, М. А. Магомедов +2 more

Abstract The Monte Carlo method has been used to study phase transitions and critical properties of the antiferromagnetic 3-state Potts model on a body-centered cubic lattice with interactions of the first (J1) and second (J2) nearest neighbors. The competition of exchange interactions in the range –2/3 < J2 < 0 was determined to result in a phase separation. In the low-temperature region, an ordered phase, lying inside the phase with broken sublattice symmetry, was found. The magnetic structures of the ground state corresponding to different regions of the phase diagram have been obtained. The analysis of the phase transition order has been carried out using the Binder cumulant method and the histogram method. It has been revealed that the interaction of the second nearest neighbors leads to a change in the type of phase transition. Static critical exponents have been calculated based on scaling relations. The critical exponents correspond to the universality class of the three-dimensional XY model.

FINITE TEMPERATURE ENTROPY OF THE ANTIFERROMAGNETIC POTTS MODEL

X. Y. CHEN, C. Y. Pan

Monte Carlo simulation is used to deal with the finite temperature entropy of the q-state antiferromagnetic Potts model which is the extension of the general q-color problem (at zero temperature). The finite temperature entropy of the model in two and three dimensions is obtained which is consistent with the zero temperature results. A possible universal relation of the model to determine when the order-disorder transition happens is proposed.

Three-dimensional antiferromagneticq-state Potts models: application of the Wang-Landau algorithm

Chiaki Yamaguchi, Yutaka Okabe

We apply a newly proposed Monte Carlo method, the Wang-Landau algorithm, to the study of the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic q -state Potts models on a simple cubic lattice. We systematically study the phase transition of the models with q = 3, 4, 5 and 6. We obtain the finite-temperature phase transition for q = 3 and 4, whereas the transition temperature is down to zero for q = 5. For q = 6 there exists no order for any temperature. We also study the ground-state properties. The size dependence of the ground-state entropy is investigated. We find that the ground-state entropy is larger than the contribution from the typical configurations of the broken-sublattice-symmetry state for q = 3. The same situations are found for q = 4, 5 and 6.

Interface Approach to Phase Transitions and Ordering by Monte Carlo Simulations and Its Applications to Three-Dimensional Antiferromagnetic Potts Models

Yohtaro Ueno, Gang Sun, Ikuo Ono

We develop an interface approach to bulk phase transitions and ordered states by using Monte Garlo simulations, and apply it to antiferromagnetic q -state Potts models with q =3∼6 on the simple cubic lattice. A stiffness exponent a defined by Δ F ∼ L a , where Δ F is the interface free energy for a system of size L , is introduced as a measure of the stiffness of the ordered phase against an external stress. Applying finite-size scaling to Δ F and to the squared order parameter enable one to determine each of T c , ν, β and γ in order where T c is the critical temperature and the others are critical exponents. This approach also provides a means to study properties of the ordered state through a and interface profiles. In the q =3 and 4 models the estimated exponents ν, β, γ and a indicate new universality classes. The q =5 model shows a phase transition, while the q =6 model does not. The q =3∼5 models have non-integer values of a at low temperatures. The phase transitions in these models are confirmed to be due to entropy gains.

Emergent O(n) Symmetry in a Series of 3D Potts Models

Chengxiang Ding, Henk W. J. Blöte, Youjin Deng

We study the q-state Potts model on the simple cubic lattice with ferromagnetic interactions along one lattice direction, and antiferromagnetic interactions along the two other directions. As the temperature T decreases, the system undergoes a second-order phase transition that fits in the universality class of the 3D O(n) model with n=q-1. This conclusion is based on the estimated critical exponents, and histograms of the order parameter. At even smaller T we find, for q=4 and 5, a first-order transition to a phase with a different type of long-range order. This long-range order dissolves at T=0, and the system effectively reduces to a disordered two-dimensional Potts antiferromagnet. These results are obtained by means of Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling.
