We present a method which generates the modular-invariant partition functions of the ADE series of SU(2)k. Dividing the diagonal theory by discrete subgroups of the conformal group, we construct all the modular-invariant partition functions, thus proving that orbifold construction generates all the partition functions of SU(2)k.
We show that the Ocneanu algebra of quantum symmetries, for an ADE diagram (or for higher Coxeter-Dynkin systems, like the Di Francesco - Zuber system) is, in most cases, deduced from the structure of the modular T matrix in the A series. We recover in this way the (known) quantum symmetries of su(2) diagrams and illustrate our method by studying those associated with the three genuine exceptional diagrams of type su(3), namely E5, E9 and E21. This also provides the shortest way to the determination of twisted partition functions in boundary conformal field theory with defect lines.
We define entanglement entropy in string perturbation theory using the orbifold method -- a stringy analog of the replica method in field theory. To this end, we use the Newton series to analytically continue in N the partition functions for string orbifolds on C/ZN conical spaces, known for all odd integer N. In the concrete example of ten-dimensional Type-IIB strings, the one-loop partition function can be computed explicitly and the one-loop entropy can be expressed as a manifestly modular invariant series in terms of the Weierstrass ℘ function. The convergence of the series is not evident but, from physical arguments based on holography, it is expected to yield a finite answer together with the tree level contribution. This method has a natural generalization to other string compactifications and to higher genus Riemann surfaces; it can provide a modular invariant definition of generalized entropy in a given string vacuum to all orders, of potential interest for the generalized second law of thermodynamics.
Abstract Global conformal invariance (GCI) of quantum field theory (QFT) in two and higher space–time dimensions implies the Huygens’ principle, and hence, rationality of correlation functions of observable fields [16]. The conformal hamiltonian H ( has discrete spectrum and we assume that the partition function tr D qH) , q = e2πi τ, Im τ> 0 (|q | < 1) as well as the finite temperature expectation values of the field products are well defined in the finite energy space D (an assumption that is verified for free fields). We then demonstrate that the finite temperature expectation values are expressed by (doubly periodic) elliptic functions in appropriate coordinates. We compute examples of 2-point functions of free fields and study the modular transformation properties of the mean value of the energy in an equilibrium state with respect to
