ANYONIC SUPERCONDUCTIVITY WITH FERROMAGNETIC GROUND STATE

Abstract

We study a system of non-relativistic two-dimensional spin-1/2 fermions minimally coupled to Chern-Simons and Maxwell gauge fields, at zero temperature. A self-consistent mean field approach leads to a ferromagnetic ground state which nevertheless is also superconducting. We calculate the spin and current correlation functions and show that there is a Meissner effect for weak external magnetic fields, characterised by two penetration lengths. The dispersion relations for the two longitudinal excitations are given. Further, the system supports spin waves which are massless in the absence of electromagnetic fields.

Mean Field Theory for Fermion-based U(2) Anyons

Patrick N. McGraw

The energy density is computed for a U(2) Chern-Simons theory coupled to a non-relativistic fermion field (a theory of ``non-Abelian anyons'') under the assumptions of uniform charge and matter density. When the matter field is a spinless fermion, we find that this energy is independent of the two Chern-Simons coupling constants and is minimized when the non-Abelian charge density is zero. This suggests that there is no spontaneous breaking of the SU(2) subgroup of the symmetry, at least in this mean-field approximation. For spin-1/2 fermions, we find self-consistent mean-field states with a small non-Abelian charge density, which vanishes as the theory of free fermions is approached.

Jordan-Wigner fermionization of quantum spin systems on arbitrary two-dimensional lattices: A mutual Chern-Simons approach

Jagannath Das, Aman Kumar, Avijit Maity +1 more

A variety of analytical approaches have been developed for the study of quantum spin systems in two dimensions, the notable ones being spin-waves, slave boson/fermion parton constructions, and for lattices with one-to-one local correspondence of faces and vertices, the two-dimensional (2D) Jordan-Wigner (JW) fermionization. Field-theoretically, JW fermionization is implemented through Chern-Simons (CS) flux attachment. For a correct fermionization of lattice quantum spin-$1/2$ magnets, it is necessary that the fermions obey mutual bosonic (anyonic) statistics under exchange---this is not possible to implement on arbitrary 2D lattices if fermionic matter couples only to the lattice gauge fields. Enlarging the gauge degrees of freedom to include the dual lattice allows the construction of consistent mutual Chern-Simons field theories. Here we propose a mutual CS theory where the microscopic (spin) degrees of freedom are represented as lattice fermionic matter additionally coupled to specific combinations of dual lattice gauge fields that depend on the local geometry. We illustrate the use of this method for understanding the properties of a honeycomb Kitaev model subjected to a strong Zeeman field in the $z$-direction. Our CS gauge theory framework provides an understanding of why the topological phase is degraded at lower (higher) critical fields for the ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic) Kitaev interaction. Additionally, we observe an effectively one-dimensional character of the low excitations at higher fields in the $z$-direction, which we also confirm by spin-wave calculations.

Anyon superconductivity in strongly-correlated spin systems

A. P. Protogenov

The present state of the gauge theory of high-temperature superconductivity in strongly-correlated two-dimensional spin systems is reviewed. Basic ideas on the statistics of elementary excitations in spatially two-dimensional systems are presented and are used in an analysis of the structure of the energy spectrum and the form of the wave function of a set of anyon quasiparticles in both the long-wave continuous and lattice limits. The continuous and lattice theories are used to classify the phase states, and the hierarchy of phase transitions is described in terms of the topological quantum field theory. Thermodynamic and electrodynamic properties of anyon systems are described, and the experimental consequences of the Chern–Simons theory of high-Tc superconductivity are discussed.

Magnetic Thomas-Fermi theory for 2D abelian anyons

Antoine Levitt, Douglas Lundholm, Nicolas Rougerie

Two-dimensional abelian anyons are, in the magnetic gauge picture, represented as fermions coupled to magnetic flux tubes. For the ground state of such a system in a trapping potential, we theoretically and numerically investigate a Hartree approximate model, obtained by restricting trial states to Slater determinants and introducing a self-consistent magnetic field, locally proportional to matter density. This leads to a fermionic variant of the Chern-Simons-Schrödinger system. We find that for dense systems, a semi-classical approximation yields qualitatively good results. Namely, we derive a density functional theory of magnetic Thomas-Fermi type, which correctly captures the trends of our numerical results. In particular, we explore the subtle dependence of the ground state with respect to the fraction of magnetic flux units attached to particles.

Exact Ground State Wave Functions for N Anyons in a Magnetic Field on the Torus

Ansar Fayyazuddin

The complete set of ground state wave functions for N anyons in an external magnetic field on the torus is found. The cases when the filling factor is less than or equal to one are considered. The single valued description of anyons is employed through out by coupling bosons to a Chern-Simons field. Chern-Simons fermionization approach to two-dimensional quantum magnets: Implications for antiferromagnetic magnons and unconventional quantum phase transitions

Rui Wang, Baigeng Wang, Tigran Sedrakyan

We develop an approach to describe antiferromagnetic magnons on a bipartite lattice supporting the N\'eel state using fractionalized degrees of freedom typically inherent to quantum spin liquids. In particular, we consider a long-range magnetically ordered state of interacting two-dimensional quantum spin-$1/2$ XY models using the Chern-Simons (CS) fermion representation of interacting spins. The interaction leads to Cooper instability and pairing of CS fermions, and to CS superconductivity which spontaneously violates the continuous $\mathrm{U}(1)$ symmetry generating a linearly dispersing gapless Nambu-Goldstone mode due to phase fluctuations. We evaluate this mode and show that it is in high-precision agreement with magnons of the corresponding N\'eel antiferromagnet irrespective to the lattice symmetry. Using the fermion formulation of the system with frustration, we show that the competing interactions emerge in the form of long-range interaction vertices mediated by the CS gauge field, which are responsible for restoring the continuous symmetry at sufficiently strong frustration. We identify these new interaction vertices and discuss their implications for unconventional phase transitions. We also apply the proposed theory to a model of anyons that can be tuned continuously from fermions to bosons, and discuss the results.
