Collision-induced multiphoton excitation of hydrogen

Abstract

The electron impact excitation of hydrogen in the presence of an electromagnetic field has been formulated within the framework of the Glauber approximation. For a low frequency EM field the cross section formula takes a simple analytic form analogous to the one discussed by Kroll and Watson (1973) for the case of potential scattering. Numerical results are given for 1s to 2p excitation and results are compared with those obtained by the first Born approximation.

Ionization collisions between two excited atoms: Application of the Glauber amplitude in the framework of the impulse approximation

Toshizo Shirai, Yohta Nakai, Hiroki Nakamura

The cross-section formula of Flannery [Phys. Rev. A 22, 2408 (1980)] in the semiquantal approximation for the processes referred to in the title is rewritten so as to make it more useful in practice. The formula is shown to be further simplified by taking an average over the azimuthal quantum number of a highly excited hydrogenic atom to be ionized. Numerical applications with use of the Glauber amplitude for the electron-atom inelastic scattering are made to the ionization collisions between two excited hydrogen atoms with simultaneous excitation and deexcitation of one of the atoms. The results are compared with those obtained by using the Born amplitude, and are analyzed in terms of the Glauber generalized oscillator strengths.

Joint collision of electrons and photons with hydrogen atoms

K. C. Mathur

Ab initio perturbation theory calculations for the excitation of then = 2state of a hydrogen atom by electron impact in the presence of a near resonant electromagnetic field are presented. Single photon near-resonance process is discussed. A significant increase in the excitation cross section for the atom is obtained by joint collisions with electrons and photons.

Electron-atom ionisation in a resonant electromagnetic field

P. Cavaliere, G. Ferrante, C Leone

Electron-atom ionisation in the presence of a resonant EM field is considered theoretically, taking the hydrogen atom as an example. The radiation field is taken to have a frequency matching the 1s-2p transition frequency. The theoretical treatment is based on the Coulomb-Born wave approximation and on the two-level atom model. The physical picture arising from the resulting field-assisted triple differential cross section (TDC) is that of ionisation events taking place simultaneously from the ground and the excited 2p states, the role of the radiation field being mainly that of pumping target atoms.

Multiphoton Transition in Hydrogen between 1S and 2P Levels

N. K. Rahman, Howard R. Reiss

$1S\ensuremath{-}2P$ multiphoton transition amplitudes are calculated for hydrogen atoms in the presence of an intense electromagnetic field. Nonlinear behavior of the transition amplitudes appears as in the case of $1S\ensuremath{-}2S$ transitions considered earlier.

Excitation of metastable hydrogen by simultaneous collision with electrons and photons

N. K. Rahman, Farhad H. M. Faisal

Cross sections for excitation of metastable hydrogen by simultaneous collision with electrons and photons are calculated with the Bethe-Born approximation. The resulting second-order matrix element is calculated exactly with an analytic Coulomb Green's function. The cross sections are shown to be of direct physical interest with present-day lasers.

Excitation of atomic hydrogen due to proton impact in the presence of a resonant laser field

Vinod Prasad, Bhupat Sharma, Man Mohan

The collision of a proton with a hydrogen atom in the presence of electromagnetic radiation which is nearly resonant with the atomic levels is investigated theoretically. The non-perturbative quasi energy method is used to describe the laser-atom interaction and the proton-dressed atom collision is solved using a diagonalization technique. We have calculated the transition probabilities and the total cross-section for various transitions. We discuss the influence of various laser and collision parameters on the excitation process.
