Abstract

The dynamics of generation and propagation of ultraslow optical solitons in a lifetime-broadened five-level hyper inverted-Y atomic system are investigated. Due to the novel absorption and dispersion properties of this system which provide the necessary ingredients for making the probe field propagate nearly transparent in three regimes, the generation of bright or dark optical solitons can be controlled with parameters management by actively manipulating the dispersion, the nonlinearity and the gain (absorption coefficient) via adjusting the corresponding one-, two- and three-photon detunings and the Rabi frequencies.

Depletion of control field during the propagation of ultraslow optical solitons

Hui‐jun Li, Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We study nonlinear excitations in a lifetime-broadened Λ-type three-level atomic system with a configuration of electromagnetically induced transparency. Different from previous works, we show that a significant depletion of the control field may occur during the formation and propagation of ultraslow optical solitons for the probe field. We demonstrate that ultraslow optical solitons predicted in previous works correspond to the limits of weak dispersion and weak nonlinearity, adiabatons correspond to the limits of stronger dispersion and stronger nonlinearity, and simultons correspond to the limits of strong dispersion and strong nonlinearity. Between these different limits the system also yields solitonlike nonlinear excitations with different levels of depletion of the control field. The results provided here are useful not only for a deep understanding of the interrelation between ultraslow optical solitons, adiabatons, and simultons, but also for potential applications in optical information processing and transmission.

Three coupled ultraslow temporal solitons in a five-level tripod atomic system

Wen‐Xing Yang, Ai-Xi Chen, Liu-Gang Si +3 more

We propose a scheme to generate three coupled ultraslow optical solitons in a five-level tripod atomic system. We show that the detrimental distortions of the three weak probe fields due to dispersion effects under weak driving conditions can be well balanced by self- and cross-phase-modulation effects, which leads to the three coupled ultraslow temporal optical solitons with the temporal, group velocity, and amplitude values nearly matched. In contrast to other schemes, our model uses optical fibers, including multichromatic optical solitons in the stimulated Raman scattering, and produces three coupled ultraslow optical solitons in a small propagation distance of less than $1$ cm with $\frac{1}{2}$ Rabi frequency of the driving field, typically less than 100 MHz.

Ultraslow optical solitons in atomic media with spontaneously generated coherence

Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a new scheme to generate stable ultraslow optical solitons in lifetime-broadened three-state V-type media via spontaneously generated coherence (SGC). We show that in the linear propagation regime, SGC in the system can result in a significant change of dispersion and absorption, which may be used to completely eliminate absorption and greatly reduce the group velocity of the probe field. In the nonlinear propagation regime, SGC can largely enhance the Kerr nonlinearity of the system. By means of SGC, stable optical solitons with ultraslow propagating velocity and ultralow generation power can be produced. Different from previous works, ultraslow optical solitons obtained in the present system based on SGC have much smaller attenuation during propagation and can be created by using only one laser field.

Storage and retrieval of ultraslow optical solitons in coherent atomic system

Zhengyang Bai, Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We investigate the propagation of intense probe pulses in a lifetime broadened Λ-type three-level atomic system with a configuration of electromagnetically induced transparency. We find that ultraslow optical solitons formed by a balance between dispersion and nonlinearity can be stored and retrieved in the system by switching off and on a control field.Such pulses are robust during storage and retrieval, and hence may have potential applications in optical and quantum information processing.

Ultraslow temporal vector optical solitons in a cold five-state atomic medium under Raman excitation

Liu-Gang Si, Ji-Bing Liu, Xin‐You Lü +1 more

We theoretically investigate the formation of ultraslow temporal vector optical solitons in a lifetime-broadened five-state atomic system under Raman excitation. By analysing the interaction between the atomic system and two strong, linear-polarized continuous wave control fields and a weak, linear-polarized pulsed signal field, having two orthogonally polarized components, we find that the Maxwell equations of describing the propagation of two orthogonal polarization components can evolve into two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which admit solutions describing vector solitons, including bright–bright, bright–dark, dark–bright and dark–dark vector solitons with ultraslow group velocity. More importantly, the Manakov temporal vector solitons can be easily realized in our system by adjusting the corresponding parameters such as the Rabi frequencies of the control fields, one- and two-photon detunings. The unique features of the two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations are also discussed.

Formation and propagation of matched and coupled ultraslow optical soliton pairs in a four-level double- Λ system

L. Deng, M. G. Payne, Guoxiang Huang +1 more

We investigate the simultaneous formation and stable propagation of ultraslow optical soliton pairs in a lifetime broadened four-state atomic system under double-Lambda excitation with large one- and two-photon detunings. We show that detrimental probe field distortions due to strong dispersion effects under weak driving conditions can be well balanced by self- and cross-phase modulation effects, leading to a pair of temporal, group velocity, and amplitude matched ultraslow optical solitons of different frequencies.
