Abstract

Generation of counterpropagating paired Stokes and anti-Stokes photons in a double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$- (or $M$-) type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system is examined in quantum theory in the three-dimensional space. We use the Maxwell-Bloch equations to study the transverse effects of generated entangled photon pairs via such an EIT medium. We reexamine correlation measurements for both amplitude and intensity correlations. In the low parametric gain region $[\sqrt{{v}_{g}∕8{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{31}L}\ensuremath{\gg}\sqrt{{k}_{s}∕{k}_{as}}(\ensuremath{\mid}{\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{p}\ensuremath{\mid}∕\ensuremath{\mid}{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{p}\ensuremath{\mid})]$, when the paired Stokes and anti-Stokes are at the single-photon level, we obtain the results shown in Wen and Rubin, Phys. Rev. A 74, 023807 (2006). If $\sqrt{{k}_{s}∕{k}_{as}}(\ensuremath{\mid}{\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{p}\ensuremath{\mid}∕\ensuremath{\mid}{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{p}\ensuremath{\mid})$ is comparable to or greater than $\sqrt{{v}_{g}∕8{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{31}L}$, i.e., in the high parametric gain regime, the system may not reach the single-photon level, and accidental coincidences occur which cause loss of visibility in the interference experiments.

Transverse effects in paired-photon generation via an electromagnetically induced transparency medium. I. Perturbation theory

Jianming Wen, Morton H. Rubin

Generation of counterpropagating paired Stokes and anti-Stokes photons at the two-photon level in an electromagnetically induced transparency system is examined in quantum theory. In particular, we focus on the transverse effects of generated entangled photon pairs. Using first-order perturbation theory, we have studied the two-photon state including the phase matching conditions. The comparison of single photon counting and two-photon coincidence counting measurement is provided, which show some interesting properties.

Transverse Correlation in Entangled Photons and Light-Matter Interaction

In recent years, quantum entanglement has attracted much; attention, because its unique properties provide potential; applications, which could not be achieved using conventional; techniques, such as quantum computing, quantum imaging and; lithography. It is; known that the transverse correlation in biphotons may improve the; visibility and resolution in quantum imaging and lithography. In; this thesis, we described an alternative biphoton source --; Raman-EIT (\textit{electromagnetically induced transparency}); generator, and emphasize on its geometrical and optical; properties. We found that to utilize the transverse effects in; paired Stokes-anti-Stokes, it is necessary to make the product of; the EIT window times the group delay much greater than unity.; To gain further insight into quantum imaging and lithography, we; studied the transverse correlation in triphoton entanglement; theoretically. We found that in the two-image process, the quality; of images is determined by the optical path-lengths, even though; the Gaussian thin lens equations are satisfied. The ghost; interference-diffraction patterns of double slits show one more; fold interference, which is essentially different from the; biphoton case. Electromagnetically-induced-transparency-based paired photon generation

Pavel Kolchin

We describe the theory of paired photon generation in a double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ atomic system. Using the Heisenberg-Langevin formalism we evaluate and analyze the spectral generation rates and intensity correlation function for the output fields. Different regimes of parametric down conversion are analyzed. We discuss the influence of the optical depth and Langevin noise fluctuations on the paired photon generation and predict that at the optical depth of 100 or more the contribution of Langevin noise fluctuations is small and therefore Stokes and anti-Stokes photons are generated mostly in pairs. Comparison between the theory and experiments shows good agreement.

Parametric amplification in an electromagnetically-induced-transparency medium

Ken-ichi Harada, Kenji Mori, Junji Okuma +2 more

In an ordinary electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) experiment using a hot sodium vapor, we have observed a probe gain up to 32 in the presence of a coupling beam in an otherwise totally opaque (transmissivity $\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$) situation, increasing the transmissivity by 6 orders of magnitude. This gain is attributable to parametric amplification (PA), accompanying the Stokes (or anti-Stokes) wave with similar output intensity, and is critically dependent upon the atomic density and the coupling beam power. Experimental and theoretical analyses have revealed that, while the EIT picture is valid for relatively low atomic densities, the PA picture becomes dominant for high atomic densities and high coupling powers. We have also found that the parametric coupling between the probe and Stokes waves can be nullified by the proper choice of the coupling detuning frequency, due to destructive interference of two elementary processes.

Correlation of photon pairs from the double Raman amplifier: Generalized analytical quantum Langevin theory

C. H. Raymond Ooi, Qingqing Sun, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy +1 more

We present a largely analytical theory for two-photon correlations ${G}^{(2)}$ between Stokes $(s)$ and anti-Stokes $(a)$ photon pairs from an extended medium (amplifier) composed of double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ atoms in counterpropagating geometry. We generalize the parametric coupled equations with quantum Langevin noise given in a beautiful experimental paper of Balic et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 183601 (2005)] beyond adiabatic approximation and valid for arbitrary strength and detuning of laser fields. We derive an analytical formula for cross correlation ${G}_{as}^{(2)}=⟨{\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{E}}_{s}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}(L){\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{E}}_{a}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}(0,\ensuremath{\tau}){\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{E}}_{a}(0,\ensuremath{\tau}){\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{E}}_{s}(L)⟩$ and use it to obtain results that are in good quantitative agreement with the experimental data. Results for ${G}_{as}^{(2)}$ obtained using our coupled equations are in good quantitative agreement with the results using the equations of Balic et al., while perfect agreement is obtained for sufficiently large detuning. We also compute the reverse correlation ${G}_{sa}^{(2)}$ which turns out to be negligibly small and remains classical while the cross correlation violates the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality by a factor of more than a hundred.

Phase-dependent double-Λ electromagnetically induced transparency

Yi‐Hsin Chen, Pin-Ju Tsai, Ite A. Yu +2 more

We theoretically investigate a double-Λ electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system. The property of the double-Λ medium with a closed-loop configuration depends on the relative phase of the applied laser fields. This phase-dependent mechanism differentiates the double-Λ medium from the conventional Kerr-based nonlinear medium, e.g., EIT-based nonlinear medium discussed by Harris and Hau [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 4611 (1999)], which depends only on the intensities of the applied laser fields. Steady-state analytical solutions for the phase-dependent system are obtained by solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations. In addition, we discuss efficient all-optical phase modulation and coherent light amplification based on the proposed double-Λ EIT scheme.
