Theory of light and atom scattering in the Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute gas

Ya. A. Avetisyan, Evgenii Dmitrievich Trifonov

A semiclassical theory of superradiant light scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute gas is developed without recourse to the mean field approximation. The dynamics and spectrum of superradiant field, as well as the kinetics of formation of coherent atomic states with various translational momenta are calculated. The results are qualitatively consistent with experimental data for atoms scattered in the backward direction relative to that of the exciting laser beam propagation.

On the theory of light and atomic backscattering in the Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute gas

Yu. A. Avetisyan, Evgenii Dmitrievich Trifonov

A semiclassical theory of light scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute gas is developed. It is shown that the results of theoretical calculations are in qualitative agreement with the data obtained from recent experiments on the observation of atoms scattered in the backward direction with respect to the direction of a pump laser beam. It is demonstrated that there can arise a field that propagates in the backward direction and whose intensity exceeds the intensity of conventional Rayleigh scattering.

Semiclassical theory of superradiant scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate

Evgenii Dmitrievich Trifonov

A semiclassical theory of superradiant scattering of light from a Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute atomic gas is proposed. Choosing atomic states with definite values of the momenta as a basis, we derive a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Its solutions describe the evolution of the scattered light intensity and of the populations of the coherent atomic states with different recoil momenta.

Condition for cooperative Rayleigh scattering of laser light from Bose-Einstein condensate

Yuri A. Avetisyan

The scattering of the extended in time laser pulse from Bose-Einstein condensate of elongated form is considered. The evaluation of the conditions determining the transition from the usual isotropic Rayleigh scattering to the sharply anistropic (directed along the condensate) cooperative or superradiant Rayleigh scattering is presented

Superradiant reflection and scattering of light from a Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute gas

A semiclassical theory of scattering and reflection of light from a Bose-Einstein condensate of a dilute gas is developed without using the mean-field approximation and with taking into account multiple scattering by each atom.
