Abstract

The weakly bound long range potential curves between a highly excited Cs* ( n s, 8 ≤ n ≤ 20) atom and a ground state Cs atom are calculated using simple but reasonably accurate models for dispersion and exchange interactions. Such curves will help in the design of experiments to observe corresponding spectra.

Ultralong-Range Rydberg Cs2 Molecules Investigated at the Ab Initio Level of Theory

Ting Ji, Xiaomeng Liu, Yonggang Yang +1 more

Vibrational properties of ultralong Rydberg Cs$_2$ molecules are investigated on corresponding potential curves obtained by perturbation theory. The Rydberg Cs$_2$ molecules are associated by a Rydberg Cs($nS/nP$) atom $(n=30-70)$ and a ground state Cs($6s$) atom. The starting point for the perturbation treatment of corresponding Rydberg molecular potential curves is to generate accurate atomic Rydberg states from realistic {\it ab initio} effective core potential. The calculated results have similar characteristics with available experimental and theoretical investigations on Rydberg Rb$_2$ molecules. And this is the first time that Rydberg molecules are studied at the {\it ab initio} level.

Long-range interactions between alkali Rydberg atom pairs correlated to thens–ns,np–np andnd–nd asymptotes

Kilian Singer, Jovica Stanojevic, Matthias Weidemüller +1 more

We have calculated the long-range interaction potential curves of highly excited Rydberg atom pairs for the combinations Li–Li, Na–Na, K–K, Rb–Rb and Cs–Cs in a perturbative approach. The dispersion C -coefficients are determined for all symmetries of molecular states that correlate to the n s– n s, n p– n p and n d– n d asymptotes. Fitted parameters are given for the scaling of the C -coefficients as a function of the principal quantum number n for all homonuclear pairs of alkali metal atoms.

Analysis of long-range Cs Rydberg potential wells

Arne Schwettmann, K. Richard Overstreet, Jonathan Tallant +1 more

We analyse bound states at long-range (R∼5 μm) for pairs of Cs atoms in the 89D and neighbouring states. These wells are due solely to avoided crossings between the van der Waals pair interaction potentials. The depth of the wells is ∼40 MHz, and vibrational spectra consist of hundreds of bound states. We present detailed calculations of the properties of two of these wells at different electric fields (∼ mV cm− 1), since the electric field changes the well depth and shape. We estimate bound-state lifetimes μs, lineshapes, and two-photon excitation and detection rates ∼Hz from the 6P state at a temperature of T = 40 μK for these molecules.

An efficient method to study highly excited states at the ab initio level and application to ultralong Rydberg CsNe molecules

Xiaomeng Liu, Yonggang Yang, Jianming Zhao +2 more

An efficient method to study highly excited states at the ab initio level has been introduced and applied to ultralong Rydberg CsNe molecules. Vibrational properties of Rydberg CsNe molecules are investigated on corresponding potential energy curves obtained by perturbation theory. The Rydberg CsNe molecules are associated with a Rydberg Cs(ns∕np) atom (n = 20-60) and a ground state Ne((1)S0) atom. The starting point for the perturbation treatment of corresponding Rydberg molecular potential energy curves is to generate accurate atomic Rydberg states from realistic ab initio effective core potential. According to the authors' knowledge this is a good reference for ultralong range molecules (order of 1000 Bohr radii) to be studied at the ab initio level.

Observation of Blue-Shifted Ultralong-Range Cs2 Rydberg Molecules

James P. Shaffer

We observe ultralong-range blue-shifted Cs2 molecular states in an optical dipole trap. The accidental near degeneracy of (n-4)l and ns Rydberg states for l>2 leads to non-adiabatic coupling, producing potential wells above the ns thresholds.

Spin-orbit-dependent lifetimes of long-range Rydberg molecules

Michael Peper, Jakob Skrotzki, Martin Trautmann +2 more

Long-range Rydberg molecules (LRMs) form when a highly excited Rydberg electron scatters from ground-state atoms inside its orbit, creating oscillatory, long-range potentials. We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of caesium dimers correlated to 402P3/2 Rydberg states, with an emphasis on decay via autoionisation (associative ionisation). Our model includes a relativistic treatment of electron-atom scattering with spin-orbit coupling, the perturber's hyperfine structure, and coupling of vibrational levels to a continuum of short-range decay channels. Calculated potential-energy curves predict two families of wells: outer wells near the classical outer turning point supporting long-lived states, and inner wells at shorter range whose lifetimes are limited by tunneling and subsequent vibronic decay. Using photoassociation in an ultracold Cs gas and an analysis of pulsed-field-ionisation signals which are highly selective for the detection of molecules, we assign resonances by binding energy and measure lifetimes. The measured lifetimes of inner-well states increase systematically with increasing detuning and agree with calculated lifetimes; detection of Cs2+ product ions supports autoionisation as a dominant channel. We show that the lifetimes are strongly reduced by spin-orbit interactions in the transient Cs-collision complex, which lift the near-degeneracy in Omega observed for states in the outer well and control the inner-well binding. The identified states also provide promising pathways to create ultracold molecules in ion-pair states.
