Abstract

We generate high-rate single photons in a single quantum state by spontaneous Raman scattering in a trapped ion. Photon frequency, polarization and temporal shape are laser-controlled. The photons create quantum jumps in another, distant ion.

We establish photonic interaction between two distant single calcium ions. Triggered single photons with controlled temporal shape are released in the sender ion; their absorption by the receiver ion is detected employing a quantum-jump scheme.

We present a single-photon to single-atom interface, where a heralded single photon generated by Spontaneous Parametric Conversion is absorbed by a single trapped ion, subsequently generating a single Raman-scattered photon that heralds the absorption event.

A high-rate source for single photons in a pure quantum state

We report on the efficient generation of single photons, making use of spontaneous Raman scattering in a single trapped ion. The photons are collected through in-vacuum high-numerical-aperture objectives. Photon frequency, polarization and temporal shape are controlled through appropriate laser parameters, allowing for photons in a pure quantum state. These photons are suitable heralds for single-photon absorption in a single-ion quantum memory.

Quantum interference in the absorption and emission of single photons by a single ion

Michael Schug, Christoph Kurz, Pascal Eich +3 more

High-contrast quantum beats in the single-photon scattering probability of a single atomic ion are experimentally observed and controlled, highlighting two distinct physical mechanisms, the interference in absorption and in emission.

Single Atom – Single Photon Interfaces

In an experimental system of two distant ion traps we trap simultaneously strings of Ca+ ions and observe Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between their scattered photons. We also generate entangled photon pairs whose frequency and bandwidth are matched to an absorption line in the ions, and work towards heralded single photon – single ion interaction.
