Equilibrium Fluctuations and Stability of the Condensate of a Degenerate Boson Fluid

Abstract

A general theory is formulated for the fluctuations in the condensate of a degenerate boson fluid in homogeneous thermodynamic equilibrium. The point of view adopted is based on Bogoliubov's description of the condensate in terms of quasiaverages and on his "Principle of Diminishing Correlation." An essential aspect of the theory is the consistent treatment of the fluctuation operators $c$ and ${c}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}$, where $c={a}_{0}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}$. ${a}_{0}$ is the annihilation operator for the zero momentum state, and the order parameter $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ is the quasiaverage of ${a}_{0}$. After the Hamiltonian for the fluctuation operators is obtained, a stability condition is derived, which we then demonstrate is satisfied under very general conditions. The energy spectrum of the condensate fluctuations is shown to be discrete, and explicit expressions are derived for the quantum states of the condensate. The ground state of the condensate is not a coherent state of the type studied by Glauber. A detailed analysis is given of the fluctuations in the order parameter and in the number of particles in the condensate. The physical properties of the fluctuations are determined by two parameters, which are the averages of the second derivatives of the Hamiltonian with respect to the order parameter. These quantities are shown to be related to the one-particle Green's functions introduced by Beliaev. The implications of this general theory are also worked out for Bogoliubov's low-density, weak-coupling model. The limit of the ideal Bose gas is then shown to possess pathological features, namely an unnormalizable ground state and infinite fluctuations, in contrast to the interacting fluid where all properties are well-behaved.

Theory of Superfluid Ground State

Masakzu Ichiyanagi

A theory is formulated for the ground state of a degenerate Bose fluid in thermal equilibrium. The fluctuations in the condensate are treated in terms of the fluctuation operators C = a 0 -α, and thir conjugate, α 0 being the annihilation operator for the zero momentum state and the order parameter α the quasiaverage of α 0 . The superfluid ground state is viewed as energy lowering by coherent excitations. The coherent state is defined in terms of the normal modes in the superfluid phase. The superfluid ground state is not the ground state of the type studied by Glassgold and Sauermann.

Statistical Distributions for the Condensate of a Degenerate Boson Fluid in Thermodynamic Equilibrium

A. E. Glassgold, H. Sauermann

Using a previously developed theory, various distribution functions are obtained for the fluctuations in the condensate of a degenerate boson fluid in homogeneous thermodynamic equilibrium. The distribution for the occupation number of the condensate is shown to be Gaussian. The Wigner distribution and the characteristic function for the order parameter are also derived. The nonexistence of Glauber's $P$ representation for this problem is demonstrated for a finite range of temperatures starting at absolute zero.

Extension of Bogoliubov theory to quasicondensates

Christophe Mora, Yvan Castin

We present an extension of the well-known Bogoliubov theory to treat low-dimensional degenerate Bose gases in the limit of weak interactions and low density fluctuations. We use a density-phase representation and show that a precise definition of the phase operator requires a space discretization in cells of size l. We perform a systematic expansion of the Hamiltonian in terms of two small parameters, the relative density fluctuations inside a cell and the phase change over a cell. The resulting macroscopic observables can be computed in one, two, and three dimensions with no ultraviolet or infrared divergence. Furthermore, this approach exactly matches Bogoliubov's approach when there is a true condensate. We give the resulting expressions for the equation of state of the gas, the ground state energy, and the first order and second order correlation functions of the field. Explicit calculations are done for homogeneous systems.

Condensation ofNbosons. III. Analytical results for all higher moments of condensate fluctuations in interacting and ideal dilute Bose gases via the canonical ensemble quasiparticle formulation

Vitaly V. Kocharovsky, Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Marlan O. Scully

We consider equilibrium canonical-ensemble fluctuations of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a trap using the particle-number conserving operator formalism of Girardeau and Arnowitt [Phys. Rev. 113, 755 (1959)] and the concept of the canonical-ensemble quasiparticles. We find explicit expressions for the characteristic function and all cumulants of the ground-state occupation statistics both for the dilute weakly interacting and ideal Bose gases. We present analytical formulas for the moments of the ground-state occupation fluctuations in the weakly interacting and ideal Bose gases in a box (``homogeneous gas'') as well as in the ideal Bose gas in an arbitrary power-law trap, in particular, in an arbitrary harmonic trap. We calculate the effect of Bogoliubov coupling between quasiparticles on suppression of the ground-state occupation fluctuations at moderate temperatures and their enhancement at very low temperatures. We clarify a crossover between ideal-gas and weakly interacting gas statistics, which is governed by a pair-correlation, squeezing mechanism. The important conclusion is that in most cases the ground-state occupation fluctuations are anomalously large and are not Gaussian even in the thermodynamic limit.

Condensation of N bosons: Microscopic approach to fluctuations in an interacting Bose gas

Anatoly A. Svidzinsky, Marlan O. Scully

We present a microscopic derivation of the master equation for the condensate density matrix for an interacting Bogoliubov-Bose gas of N atoms. We choose the interaction Hamiltonian in a special way that substantially simplifies the master equation, yielding no coupling between diagonal and off-diagonal terms. The present formulation allows us to solve the problem analytically in a steady state and obtain the expression for the distribution function and equilibrium condensate fluctuations. For the first two central moments, our results are equivalent to those obtained in the canonical-ensemble quasiparticle formalism [V. V. Kocharovsky, Vl. V. Kocharovsky, and M. O. Scully, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2306 (2000); Phys. Rev. A 61, 053606 (2000)], in the low-temperature range where these papers are valid, but also give an accurate description at high temperatures. The present analysis for an interacting Bose gas is as accurate as the master equation approach of Kocharovsky et al. [Phys. Rev. A 61, 023609 (2000)] is for an ideal gas.

Conserving and gapless approximations for an inhomogeneous Bose gas at finite temperatures

Adam Griffin

We derive and discuss the equations of motion for the condensate and its fluctuations for a dilute, weakly interacting Bose gas in an external potential within the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) approximation. Account is taken of the depletion of the condensate and the anomalous Bose correlations, which are important at finite temperatures. We give a critical analysis of the self-consistent HFB approximation in terms of the Hohenberg-Martin classification of approximations (conserving vs gapless) and point out that the Popov approximation to the full HFB gives a gapless single-particle spectrum at all temperatures. The Beliaev second-order approximation is discussed as the spectrum generated by functional differentiation of the HFB single-particle Green's function. We emphasize that the problem of determining the excitation spectrum of a Bose-condensed gas (homogeneous or inhomogeneous) is difficult because of the need to satisfy several different constraints.
