Dynamics of a spin-1 model with the pair correlation

Abstract

A spin-1 or three state system will undergo a first or second order phase transition depending on the ratio of coupling parameters α. Using the pair correlation approximation, the transition temperature is determined in order to establish the unstable, the metastable, as well as the stable regions of this cooperative system. The dynamics of the system is studied by means of the most probable path method and the flow lines and fixed points of the system are given for zero field. The choice of possible initial conditions is discussed. The role of the unstable points in the phase diagram, as separators between the stable and metastable points, is described, and they are computed for a number of cases.

Thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams of spin-1 quantum Ising systems with three-spin interactions

Hui Jiang, Xiang-Mu Kong

The spin-1 quantum Ising systems with three-spin interactions on two-dimensional triangular lattices are studied by mean-field method. The thermal variations of order parameters and phase diagrams are investigated in detail. The stable, metastable and unstable branches of the order parameters are obtained. According to the stable conditions at critical point, we find that the systems exhibit tricritical points. With crystal field and biquadratic interactions, the system has rich phase diagrams with single reentrant or double reentrant phase transitions for appropriate ranges of the both parameters.

Dynamic Behavior of a Spin-1 Ising Model. Relaxation of Order Parameters and the `Flatness' Property of Metastable States

Mustafa KESKİN, Rıza Erdem

Dynamic behavior of a spin-1 Ising model [1] with arbitrary bilinear (J) and biquadratic (K) pair interactions is studied by using the path probability method [2]. First the equilibrium behavior of the model is given briefly in order to understand the nonequilibrium behavior. Then the path probability method is applied to the spin-1 Ising model with J and K Hamiltonian and the system of nonlinear differential equations, which are also called the dynamic equations or rate equations, is found. The dynamic equations are solved using the Runga-Kutta method and the solutions, namely relaxation of order parameters are examined to see the "flatness" property of metastable states. It is found that the system relaxes to either stable or metastable states depending upon the initial values of the order parameters. Moreover, if there are more than one metastable states, the relaxation occurs according to the initial values of the order parameters or free energy values. Finally, the results are compared with the flow diagrams which are the solutions of the dynamic equations in two-dimensional phase space [3] and it is seen that the same results are found except for the "flatness" property of metastable states.

Stability conditions for the generalized Ising model: S=1

G. Bruce Taggart

We consider the generalized Ising model for a spin-1 system, i.e., the most general static Hamiltonian with pair interactions in a spin-1 subspace. This Hamiltonian has previously been used to model lattice-gas systems, ternary alloys, and normal liquid mixtures, as well as other threestate systems. As special cases one obtains the Blume-Emery-Griffiths model for $^{3}\mathrm{He}$-$^{4}\mathrm{He}$ mixtures and the Blume-Capel model for singlet-ground-state systems. Here we use exact hightemperature expansions in field, to the linear term in $\ensuremath{\beta}={({k}_{B}T)}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ for the pair-correlation functions, to construct the generalized static susceptibility. The singularity in the susceptibility as the system is lowered in temperature yields an expression for the temperature at which the system becomes unstable with respect to fluctuations in the order parameters. This stability temperature is a function of the order parameters and the interactions. Our result is equivalent to the mean-field approximation (with its incumbent limitations) and yields a surface in thermodynamic space which separates regions of stability (or metastability) and instability. We look specifically at the stability surfaces and stability temperatures for a number of special cases as well as the general result.

DYNAMIC DIPOLE AND QUADRUPOLE PHASE TRANSITIONS IN THE KINETIC SPIN-1 MODEL

Mustafa Keskín, Osman Canko, Ersin Kantar

The dynamic phase transitions have been studied, within a mean-field approach, in the kinetic spin-1 Ising model Hamiltonian with arbitrary bilinear and biquadratic pair interactions in the presence of a time varying (sinusoidal) magnetic field by using the Glauber-type stochastic dynamics. The nature (first- or second-order) of the transition is characterized by investigating the behavior of the thermal variation of the dynamic order parameters. The dynamic phase transitions (DPTs) are obtained and the phase diagrams are constructed in the temperature and magnetic field amplitude plane and found six fundamental types of phase diagrams. Phase diagrams exhibit one or two dynamic tricritical points depending on the biquadratic interaction (K). Besides the disordered (D) and ferromagnetic (F) phases, the FQ + D, F + FQ and F + D coexistence phase regions also exist in the system and the F and F + D phases disappear for high values of K.

Dynamic phase transitions and dynamic phase diagrams in the kinetic mixed spin-1 and spin-2 Ising system in an oscillating magnetic field

Mustafa Keskín, Mehmet Ertaş, Osman Canko

We study the nonequilibrium aspects of the kinetics of a mixed spin-1 and spin-2 Ising system including the biquadratic nearest-neighbor pair interaction ( K ) and crystal-field interaction ( D ) under the presence of a time-dependent oscillating external magnetic field within a mean-field approach. In particular, we calculate the dynamic phase transition (DPT) temperatures and present dynamic phase diagrams. The set of mean-field dynamic equations is obtained by employing Glauber transition rates. We investigate the time variations of average order parameters to find the phases in the system. We also study the thermal behavior of the dynamic order parameters to characterize the nature (continuous or discontinuous) of the phase transitions and obtain the DPT points. The dynamic phase diagrams are presented in three different planes. Phase diagrams contain disordered (d), ferrimagnetic (i), antiquadrupolar or staggered (a) phases, and four coexistence or mixed phase regions, namely i+d, i+a, i+a+d and a+d mixed phases, that strongly depend on interaction parameters.

Dynamic behavior of the spin-1/2 Ising Model in an oscillating external magnetic field

Ümüt Temizer

The dynamic phase transition (DPT) temperatures and the dynamic phase diagrams are obtained for spin-1/2 Ising system under the presence of a time-dependent oscillating external magnetic field using the method that was purposed by Meijer and Edwards [ANNALS of PHYSICS, 54, 240 (1969)] within the framework of the Bethe or constant coupling theory. The time variation of magnetization is investigated to find the phases in the system. Thermal behavior of the average magnetization is studied to characterize the nature (continuous and discontinuous) of transitions and to obtain the dynamic phase transition temperatures. The DPT temperatures are found always a second-order; hence there can be no tricritical point separating lines of first- and second-order dynamic phase transitions. This result agrees with the dynamic Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations of a two-dimensional kinetic spin-1/2 Ising model in an oscillating external magnetic field.
