Nonlinear polarizability of a two-isotope active medium in a ring laser in the presence of interisotope resonance photon exchange

Abstract

The resonance radiation trapping operators are constructed for a two-isotope excited atom ensemble allowing for interisotope resonance photon exchange. The nonlinear polarizability of a ring-laser medium is calculated using the strong collision model and an expression is obtained which relates the exchange parameter with the isotope shift due to the resonance transition and with the trapping parameter. Relationships are derived and analyzed for the nonlinear self-interaction and interaction parameters of the opposite waves under complete exchange conditions by accurately solving a system of kinetic equations.

Trapping of resonance radiation and nonlinear interaction of waves in a ring laser

A. Birman, A. F. Savushkin

Exact solution of the kinetic equation with a one-dimensional averaged Keilson--Storer kernel is used to calculate the nonlinear polarizability of the active medium of a ring laser allowing for complete trapping of resonance radiation. An analysis is made of the extent to which the relationships obtained differ from the known results of the theory based on the model of strong collisions. It is shown that radiation trapping may reduce significantly the instability zone of the two-wave stimulated emission.

Computer Simulation of Transition Regimes of Solitons in Four-Photon Resonant Parametric Processes in Case of Two-Photon Resonance

Vladimir Feshchenko, Galina Feshchenko

The transition regimes of solitons in four-photon resonant processes in the case of two-photon absorption of the fundamental radiation are numerically investigated. The standard system of equations for the amplitudes of probability of finding the system in state with certain energy is used to derive the expression for the induced polarization in the nonlinear medium. As for the equations for the amplitudes of the optical pulses, the general case is considered in which both the amplitudes and phases are space-time dependent. We focus on the finite difference methods and the case of simultaneously propagating solitons at all frequencies of the interacting waves (simultons). The obtained results indicate that upon certain threshold conditions all interacting pulses become the solitons of Lorentzian shape. The numerical analysis has also shown that the soliton amplitudes significantly depend on the ratio between the nonlinear polarizability at the fundamental frequency ω0 and that of combination of ω0 and the trigger-field frequency ω1(2ω0 + ω1). In the second part of the paper, we apply the method of phase planes to show that at typical values of parameters, the solitons are stable.

Theoretical Model of a Zeeman Gas Laser Operating Far from Threshold

A. M. Barmasova, V.A. Sokolov

Nonlinear interactions of two circularly polarized counterpropagating waves in the two-isotope gas active medium placed in an axial magnetic field are investigated on the basis of semiclassical theory. The polarization of the Doppler-broadened active medium is calculated without use of the perturbation theory expansion over the intensity of laser field (that is in the case of the large gain parameter). Difference in relaxation constants of all possible polarization moments is taken into consideration.

Polarization multistability in a ring resonator with a nonlinear optically active medium

Vladimir Makarov, A. V. Matveeva

An analysis is made of the propagation of a plane electromagnetic wave through a ring resonator containing a cell with a nonlinear optically active liquid. The influence of the spatial dispersion of the cubic nonlinearity on the amplitude and polarization characteristics of the output radiation is investigated in the steady-state regime. The transient problem is solved numerically in the instability region. It is shown that random changes in the intensity, ellipticity, and angle of rotation of the polarization ellipse of the output radiation are possible for certain values of the intensity of linearly polarized pump radiation, resonator parameters, and properties of the medium.

Resonances of intensities and oscillation frequencies in ring gas lasers. I

T. V. Radina

Narrow resonances of the intensities and oscillation frequencies of counterpropagating waves in the vicinity of the center of the quantum transition in a pure-isotope ring gas laser have been studied. It is shown that the origin of resonances is related to the presence of sources causing unequal losses and/or frequencies of the counterpropagating waves in the laser cavity. The resonance change of intensities, which is accompanied by the resonance behavior of the medium dispersion for each of the waves, is not related to resonance changes of the saturated gain coefficients of the nonlinear medium. The resonances are caused by the redistribution of energy between the waves. The character of resonance changes of frequencies and intensities depends on the nature of nonreciprocity present in the cavity.

Nonlinear properties of optically dense medium excited by multifrequency laser radiation

К. А. Баранцев, A. N. Litvinov, Evgeniy Popov

This work is devoted to nonlinear effects in the atomic medium excited by multifrequency laser radiation. We have considered collective light scattering in the optically dense medium in conditions of coherent population trapping. Propagation of intermode correlation coefficient was calculated and it was found that correlation can increase in the medium. Light shifts of the coherent population trapping resonances and ways of their suppression were analyzed. Propagation of radiation in the medium with closed excitation scheme was investigated.
