Quantum Phase Transition Induced by Geometrical Changes in Spin–Phonon Interaction

Abstract

Spin–phonon interaction effects in a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain coupled to phonons are investigated in systems with variable crystal structures. By performing a unitary transformation to a Hamiltonian of the system, we derive effective Hamiltonians expanded in powers of spin–phonon and spin–spin couplings. Ground-state phase transitions between a spin-liquid phase and a spin-gapped phase are investigated by a level spectroscopy analysis of numerical diagonalization data of effective systems. Our results depend on whether the ground state of the Heisenberg chain is in the spin-liquid phase or the spin-gapped phase. In the system where the ground state is in the spin-liquid phase, the spin–phonon interaction causes the usual phase transition to the spin-gapped phase. On the other hand, in the system where the ground state is in the spin-gapped phase, the spin–phonon interaction causes the novel phase transition to the spin-liquid phase for some geometrical structures. The phase transition from the spin-gapped phase to the spin-liquid phase is observed by changing a parameter to control the change in a geometrical structure.

Quantum Phase Transition in Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains Coupled to Phonons

Satoru Akiyama, Chitoshi Yasuda

We develop an analytical approach based on a unitary transformation to investigate S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains coupled to phonons, and find a new quantum phase transition at zero temperature. Although the usual phase transition occurs depending on the strengths of the spin-spin and spin-phonon interactions, the phase transition in the present work is induced by a change in the geometrical structure of the spin-phonon interaction. The magnetic properties of the phase transition can be understood in relation to a phase transition that has already been found in the frustrated J1-J2 model.

Spin-Phonon Chains with Bond Coupling

Rainer Walter Kühne

We investigate the antiadiabatic limit of an antiferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to Einstein phonons via a bond coupling. The flow equation method is used to decouple the spin and the phonon part of the Hamiltonian. In the effective spin model longer range spin-spin interactions are generated. The effective spin chain is frustrated. The resulting temperature dependent couplings are used to determine the magnetic susceptibility and to determine the phase transition from a gapless state to a dimerized gapped phase. The susceptibilities and the phase diagram obtained via the effective couplings are compared with independently calculated quantum Monte Carlo results.

Phase diagram and correlation function of a spin-Peierls system in the ground state: Effects of the quantum lattice fluctuations

Qin Wang, Hang Zheng, Hong Chen

Using a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain model with spin-phonon interaction, the effects of quantum lattice fluctuations on the phase diagram and correlation functions in the ground state of the spin-Peierls system are investigated by developing an analytical approach based on the unitary transformation method. To study the nonadiabatic case, the Green's function method is used to implement the perturbation treatment. We show that when the spin-phonon coupling constant decreases or phonon frequency increases, the lattice dimerization and the spin dimerization gap decrease gradually. At some finite critical value, the Peierls dimerization is destroyed by the quantum lattice fluctuations and the system becomes gapless. The inverse-square-root singularity of the density of states at the gap edge in the adiabatic case disappears because of the nonadiabatic effect, which is consistent with the measurement of the optical absorption spectrum in quasi-one-dimensional spin-Peierls systems. The dimerization gap is much more reduced by the quantum lattice fluctuations than the spin dimer order parameter is. This could result in a true spin dimerization gap that is smaller than the activation energy of the optical absorption spectrum.

Phase Diagram of a Heisenberg Spin-Peierls Model with Quantum Phonons

Robert J. Bursill, Ross H. McKenzie, Chris J. Hamer

Using a new version of the density-matrix renormalization group we determine the phase diagram of a model of an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain where the spins interact with quantum phonons. A quantum phase transition from a gapless spin-fluid state to a gapped dimerized phase occurs at a nonzero value of the spin-phonon coupling. The transition is in the same universality class as that of a frustrated spin chain, to which the model maps in the diabatic limit. We argue that realistic modeling of known spin-Peierls materials should include the effects of quantum phonons.

Lattice dynamical effects on the Peierls transition in one-dimensional metals and spin chains

Holger Fehske, Michael Holicki, Er Weiße

Summary: The interplay of charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom is studied for quasi-one-dimensional electron and spin systems coupled to quantum phonons. Special emphasis is put on the influence of the lattice dynamics on the Peierls transition. Using exact diagonalization techniques the ground-state and spectral properties of the Holstein model of spinless fermions and of a frustrated Heisenberg model with magneto-elastic coupling are analyzed on finite chains. In the non-adiabatic regime a (T = 0) quantum phase transition from a gapless Luttinger-liquid/spin-fluid state to a gapped dimerized phase occurs at a nonzero critical value of the electron/spin-phonon interaction. To study the nature of the spin-Peierls transition at finite temperatures for the infinite system, an alternative Green’s function approach is applied to the magnetostrictive XY model. With increasing phonon frequency the structure factor shows a remarkable crossover from soft-mode to central-peak behaviour. The results are discussed in relation to recent experiments on CuGeO3. 1
