ON THE BOUNDARY MAGNETIZATION OF SOME LAYERED MODEL

Abstract

In the present letter we generalize a previous exact result for the boundary magnetization of the two-dimensional layered Ising model, obtaining an expression in which the bulk limits of the interactions do not appear explicitly. The formula we have obtained is applicable even when such limits are not defined, as is for aperiodic systems, which are briefly discussed. The methods used, developed for Ising-like models, are then extended to quantum antiferromagnetic chains at zero temperature.

Boundary Magnetization of a Two-Dimensional Ising Model with Inhomogeneous Nearest-Neighbor Interactions

Alessandro Pelizzola

An explicit formula for the boundary magnetization of a two-dimensional Ising model with a strip of inhomogeneous interactions is obtained by means of a transfer matrix mean-field method introduced by Lipowski and Suzuki. There is clear numerical evidence that the formula is exact. By taking the limit where the width of the strip approaches infinity and the interactions have well-defined bulk limits, I arrive at the boundary magnetization for a model which includes the Hilhorst-van Leeuwen model. The rich critical behavior of the latter magnetization is thereby rederived with little effort.

EXACT BOUNDARY MAGNETIZATION OF THE LAYERED ISING MODEL ON TRIANGULAR AND HONEYCOMB LATTICES

Alessandro Pelizzola

In the present paper we extend a previous exact calculation of the boundary magnetization of the square lattice layered Ising model, based on a transfer-matrix effective-field technique, to the triangular lattice. The result is then further extended to the honeycomb lattice by means of a star-triangle transformation. Finally, the (11) boundary of the square lattice is analyzed as a particular case of the triangular and honeycomb lattices.

ON ISING CORRELATION FUNCTIONS WITH BOUNDARY MAGNETIC FIELD

Robert Konik, André LeClair, Giuseppe Mussardo

Exact expressions of the boundary state and the form factors of the Ising model are used to derive differential equations for the one-point functions of the energy and magnetization operators of the model in the presence of a boundary magnetic field. We also obtain explicit formulas for the massless limit of the one-point and two-point functions of the energy operator.

Phase boundary of the two-dimensional Ising model with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions in a magnetic field

Craig Rottman

The interface method is used to derive the order-disorder critical temperature of the two-dimensional Ising model on a rectangular lattice with ferromagnetic interactions in the x direction and antiferromagnetic interactions in the y direction. Employing this approximation in two different ways gives different critical temperatures ${T}_{c}$ for nonzero uniform magnetic fields H. However, both of the phase boundaries ${T}_{c}$(H) reduce to the exact results available at H=0 and T=0. .AE

Theory of Toeplitz Determinants and the Spin Correlations of the Two-Dimensional Ising Model. IV

Barry M. McCoy, Tai Tsun Wu

We consider the rectangular Ising model on a half-plane of infinite extent and study some of the consequences connected with the presence of the boundary. Only the spins on the boundary row are allowed to interact with a magnetic field $\mathfrak{H}$. The method of Pfaffians is employed to obtain exact expressions for the partition function. It is found that the free energy is the sum of two terms, one of which is independent of $\mathfrak{H}$ and proportional to the total number of lattice sites, while the other depends on $\mathfrak{H}$ and is proportional to the number of lattice sites on the boundary. This separation makes it possible to define various thermodynamic quantities associated with the boundary. In particular, the boundary magnetization is shown to be discontinuous, in the ferromagnetic case, at zero magnetic field for temperatures below the bulk critical temperature ${T}_{c}$. This discontinuity, which is the spontaneous boundary magnetization, goes to zero as ${(1\ensuremath{-}\frac{T}{{T}_{c}})}^{\frac{1}{2}}$ as $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{T}_{c}\ensuremath{-}$. For $T={T}_{c}$, the discontinuity is of course absent, and the boundary magnetization behaves as $\ensuremath{-}\mathfrak{H}\mathrm{ln}\mathfrak{H}$ for small $\mathfrak{H}$. The boundary susceptibility at zero magnetic field in the ferromagnetic case exhibits a logarithmic singularity at $T={T}_{c}$, both above and below transition. An interesting feature is that the ferromagnetic boundary magnetization, although discontinuous for $T<{T}_{c}$, may be analytically continued beyond the point $\mathfrak{H}=0$. We interpret this as a hystersis phenomenon which we study in detail by computing the probability distribution function for the average boundary spin. The correlation function for two spins, both on the boundary row, is also obtained exactly and its asymptotic behavior is given. Finally, we derive an expression for the magnetization in any row and explicitly evaluate it for the second row, i.e., the row next to the boundary.

Boundary Critical Behaviour of Two-Dimensional Layered Ising Models

Alessandro Pelizzola

Layered models are models in which the coupling constants depend in an arbitrary way on one spatial coordinate, usually the distance from a free surface or boundary. Here the theory of the boundary critical behaviour of two-dimensional layered Ising models, including the Hilhorst–van Leeuwen model and models for aperiodic systems, is reviewed, with a particular attention to exact results for the critical behaviour and the boundary order parameter.
