Abstract

We propose a simple modification of the experimental scheme employed by Brune et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 4887 (1996)] for the generation and detection of a Schr"odinger cat state, in which the decoherence of the cat state can be significantly slowed down using an appropriate feedback.

Protecting schrödinger cat states using feedback

David Vitali, P. Tombesi, Gerard J Milburn

A feedback model based on direct photodetection and micromaser-like atomic injection is proposed for the preservation of quantum coherence in a cavity. We show that in this way it is possible to slow down significantly the decoherence of Schrödinger cat states.

Effect of feedback on the decoherence of a Schrödinger-cat state: A quantum trajectory description

Peter Goetsch, Paolo Tombesi, David Vitali

The linear stochastic Schr\"odinger equation of a cavity mode subject to a homodyne measurement and to a phase-sensitive feedback loop realized with part of the output homodyne photocurrent is derived. We show that quantum feedback has stabilizing effects which manifest themselves in a significant retardation of the decoherence of a Schr\"odinger-cat state. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

All-Optical Model for the Generation and the Detection of Macroscopic Quantum Coherence

We show that with a suitable modification of the model proposed by Yurke, Schleich, and Walls [Phys. Rev. A 42, 1703 (1990)] for the generation of linear superpositions of macroscopically distinct quantum states, it is possible to arrange a scheme for generating and detecting optical Schr\"odinger catlike states which is experimentally feasible with current technologies.

Autofeedback model for Schrodinger cat preservation

Summary form only given. Decoherence, i.e., the rapid destruction of the phase relation between two quantum states of a system caused by the entanglement of these two states with two different states of the environment, is the main limiting factor for quantum information processing. For this reason decoherence control is now becoming a rapidly expanding field of investigation. The progressive decoherence of a mesoscopic Schrodinger cat state has been observed for the first time in the experiment of Brune et al where the linear superposition of two coherent states of a field in a microwave cavity, with classically distinct phases, has been generated and detected.
