Abstract

A fully quantum-mechanical theory of nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a system of two-level atoms is presented. The squeezing in the output field from an intracavity four-wave-mixing experiment is calculated. The theory is compared with the recent experimental results of Slusher, Hollberg, Yurke, Mertz, and Valley and strategies to improve the squeezing are suggested.

Quantum theory of nondegenerate multiwave mixing

Recently there has been much interest in the quantum theory of multiwave mixing in atomic media, partly due to the promise of generating squeezed states of light using four-wave mixing (FWM) schemes, which need a quantized electro-magnetic-field theory to assess the effect of propagation loss and spontaneous emission on squeezing. In fact, squeezed states have recently been observed in an intracavity nondegenerate backward FWM experiment in an atomic beam of sodium.1

Squeezed states from nondegenerate four-wave mixers

J. R. Klauder, S. L. McCall, Bernard Yurke

By closely following the work of Reid and Walls, a fully quantum-mechanical treatment of an atomic radiation-field interaction is developed with the aim of deriving basic equations for a nondegenerate four-wave mixer. The resultant equations are examined in forward and cavity geometries for their implications regarding squeezed states. Good agreement between our theory and the experiments of Slusher et al. is demonstrated.

Generation of squeezed states of light

A review of the current status of squeezed state generation and an anaysis of squeezing in nondegenerate four-wave mixing in two-level atoms are given. The case of intracavity cavity four-wave mixing with a noncollinear pump is analyzed and compared to the recent experiments of Slusher et at.1 For comparison the cases of a collinear pump and perfect phase matching are considered. The conditions for optimum squeezing are calculated.

Generation of squeezed states by nondegenerate multiwave mixing in two-level media

Using our quantum theory of multiwave mixing, we derive formulas for the intracavity squeezed variances generated by nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a cavity and illustrate the results with variance spectra as functions of side-mode/pump beat frequency.

Quantum theory of nondegenerate four-wave mixing in semiconductors

A. E. Paul, Markus Lindberg, Sunghyuck An +2 more

A quantum theory of nondegenerate four-wave mixing is developed and applied to study a highly excited semiconductor resonator operating below or near the laser threshold. It is found that total carrier-density pulsations allow coherent effects in semiconductors despite the rapid decay of the electron-hole correlations. The output spectrum for a nondegenerate four-wave mixing intracavity experiment is computed and squeezing in the sidemode spectrum is predicted.

Squeezing by nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a system of three-level atoms: effects of the thermal field

Tran Quang, Vladimír Bužek

We have studied the generation of squeezing by nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a system of three-level atoms. The conditions for obtaining a large degree of squeezing in experiments with Rydberg atoms are given.
