Abstract

We have observed the fast and slow light propagation in a single fiber ring resonator simultaneously. The two outputs of this structure behave different transmission characteristics that result in opposite dispersion performance. The transmission spectral and group delay of two outputs are demonstrated experimentally and theoretically.

Simultaneous observation of superluminal and slow light propagation in a nested fiber ring resonator

Jinfang Wang, Yundong Zhang, Jing Zhang +3 more

We observe both superluminal and slow light propagation simultaneously in a nested fiber ring resonator. The two outputs of the resonator exhibit different absorption characteristics that produce opposite dispersion performance. The transmission spectra of two outputs are demonstrated experimentally for a variety of coupler settings. In particular, the group delays of the resonator for various values of the coupling coefficients are demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. We also discuss potential applications of the resonator.

Experimental observations of the transition from fast light to slow light in a side-coupled ring resonator

Yundong Zhang, Xuenan Zhang, Xiaoqi Liu +2 more

We report the experimental observation of dispersion transition from abnormal dispersion (fast light) to normal dispersion (slow light) in a side-coupled ring resonator. We reveal that the transition from fast light to slow light can occur, when the tuned loss of the resonator results in the experience from the undercoupled regime to the overcoupled regime. Also, we experimentally fabricate the fiber side-coupled ring resonator, and measure the group delay of the resonator by coupling the resonator to a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The measured experimental results demonstrate the dispersion transition, and are in good agreement with the corresponding theoretical results. The sidecoupled resonator with the tunable dispersion (group delay) can exploited for optical storage devices, slow light Fourier transform (FT) interferometric spectrometers, white light cavities (WLCs), optical switches, optical routers, and optical sensors.

Linear and nonlinear behavior in single-ring resonators

Abdolkarim Afroozeh

This study has been focused on the linear and nonlinear behavior and investigative in single-ring resonator. Optical fiber ring resonators have great interest due to different applications, especially in communication, secured communication, slow light, fast light and light storage in optical buffers. There are many proposed applications of optical ring resonators. Optical fiber ring resonators can be readily constructed from standard optical fiber components, which allow their properties to be studied in a systematic manner. In this paper, we describe our studies of the optical transmission, intensity, shift phase and group delay characteristics of a family of such devices. In this case, Gaussian beam has been used as an input pulse inside to microring resonators. In this paper, transmission, intensity, shift phase and group delay characteristics of device have been investigated. It has been compared together in different coupling coefficients in frame of linear and nonlinear.

Superluminal and slow light in eye-like ring resonator

Yundong Zhang, Kai Ma, Yongfeng Wu +3 more

We investigate the phase and group delay in eye-like ring resonator with the effect of different coupling coefficients and attenuation factors. The eye-like structure is composed of two bus waveguides coupling with the outer ring and the two rings coupling together which have the same perimeters. The eye-like ring resonator has two outputs which have different transmission characteristics. In this paper, we measure the group delay of the two outputs through changing the coupling coefficients and the attenuation factors of the inner and the outer ring. The result shows that the two outputs have reverse group delay (superluminal and slow light) which will have potential use in slow light fiber, optical buffers and optical switches.

Fast and slow light in zigzag microring resonator chains

Pedro Chamorro‐Posada, Francisco Javier Fraile-Pelaez

We analyze fast- and slow-light transmission in a zigzag microring resonator chain. In the superluminal case, a new light-transmission effect is found whereby the input optical pulse is reproduced in an almost-simultaneous manner at the various system outputs. When the input carrier is tuned to a different frequency, the system permits to slow down the propagating optical signal. Between these two extreme cases, the relative delay can be tuned within a broad range. We propose, and analyze numerically, a laser-array configuration for the stable operation of active devices.
