Abstract

We study the pseudogaps in the spectra of the 2D Hubbard model using both finite-size and dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) quantum Monte Carlo calculations. At half-filling, a charge pseudogap, accompanied by non-Fermi-liquid behavior in the self-energy, is shown to persist in the thermodynamic limit. The DCA (finite-size) method systematically underestimates (overestimates) the width of the pseudogap. A spin pseudogap is not seen at half-filling. At finite doping, a divergent d-wave pair susceptibility is observed.

ANISOTROPIC PSEUDOGAP IN THE HALF-FILLING TWO-DIMENSIONAL HUBBARD MODEL AT FINITE TEMPERATURE

Taiichiro Saikawa, Álvaro Antônio Bandeira Ferraz

We have studied the pseudogap formation in the single-particle spectra of the half-filling two-dimensional Hubbard model. Using a Green's function with the one-loop self-energy correction of the spin and charge fluctuations, we have numerically calculated the self-energy, the spectral function, and the density of states in the weak-coupling regime at finite temperatures. Pseudogap formations have been observed in both the density of states and the spectral function at the Fermi level. The pseudogap in the spectral function is explained by the non-Fermi-liquid-like nature of the self-energy. The anomalous behavior in the self-energy is caused by both the strong antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation and the nesting condition on the non-interacting Fermi surface. In the present approximation, we find a logarithmic singularity in the integrand of the self-energy imaginary part. The pseudogap in the spectral function is highly momentum dependent on the Fermi surface. This anisotropy of the pseudogap is produced by the flatness of the band dispersion around the saddle point rather than the nesting condition on the Fermi level.

Anisotropic pseudogap in the half-filling 2-d Hubbard model at finite T

Concerning the energy dependence of the spectral function and the self-energy, two theorems are proved. They give a necessary condition in the self-energy to produce the pseudogap at the Fermi level. The pseudogap in the spectral function is highly momentum dependent on the Fermi surface. It opens initially in the $(\pm π,0)$, $(0,\pm π)$ regions as the normal state pseudogap observed in the high-$T_c$ superconductors and if the interaction is increased, it spreads to other Fermi surface sectors. The anisotropy of the pseudogap is produced by the low-energy enhancement of the spin excitation around ${\bf Q}=(π,π)$ and the flatness of the band dispersion around the saddle point.

Equation of state of the fermionic two-dimensional Hubbard model

J. P. F. LeBlanc, Emanuel Gull

We present results for the equation of state of the two-dimensional Hubbard model on an isotropic square lattice as obtained from a controlled and numerically exact large-cluster dynamical mean field simulation. Our results are obtained for large but finite systems and are extrapolated to infinite system size using a known finite-size scaling relation, and are supplemented by reliable error bars accounting for all sources of errors. We establish the importance of examining the decay of spatial spin correlations to determine whether a sufficiently large cluster has been used and with this in mind we present the energy, entropy, double occupancy, and nearest-neighbor spin correlations extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit. We discuss the implications of these calculations on pseudogap physics of the 2D Hubbard model away from half filling, where we find a strong behavioral shift in energy below a temperature ${T}^{*}$ which becomes more pronounced for larger clusters. Finally, we provide reference calculations and tables for the equation of state for values of doping away from half filling which are of interest to cold-atom experiments.

Quantum Critical Point at Finite Doping in the 2D Hubbard Model: A Dynamical Cluster Quantum Monte Carlo Study

N. S. Vidhyadhiraja, Alexandru Macridin, Cengiz Şen +2 more

We explore the Matsubara quasiparticle fraction and the pseudogap of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with the dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo method. The character of the quasiparticle fraction changes from non-Fermi-liquid, to marginal Fermi liquid, to Fermi liquid as a function of doping, indicating the presence of a quantum critical point separating non-Fermi-liquid from Fermi-liquid character. Marginal Fermi-liquid character is found at low temperatures at a very narrow range of doping where the single-particle density of states is also symmetric. At higher doping the character of the quasiparticle fraction is seen to cross over from Fermi liquid to marginal Fermi liquid as the temperature increases.

Pseudogap formation in the half-filled Hubbard model

Marco Vekić, Steven R. White

Using quantum Monte Carlo, we study the evolution of pseudogaps in the spectral weight function for a half-filled two-dimensional Hubbard model as a function of temperature and coupling constant. The formation of pseudogaps at finite temperature can be used to distinguish between three regimes: (1) a strong-coupling Mott-Hubbard regime, characterized by a pseudogap which persists even at high temperatures; (2) a weak-coupling spin-density-wave regime, characterized by the absence of a pseudogap at any finite temperature; and (3) an intermediate-coupling regime with mixed behavior, characterized by a pseudogap that appears at a finite temperature.
