The propagator for a particle in a well

Abstract

An elementary derivation is given for the propagator of a particle in an infinitely deep well. The time evolution of the wavefunction is illustrated through some examples, and certain general properties of the propagator are discussed. The connection with the Talbot effect and other phenomena is outlined.

Optical simulation of quantum mechanics on the Möbius strip, Klein’s bottle and other manifolds, and Talbot effect

Jakub Bělín, Tomáš Tyc, S. A. R. Horsley

Abstract We analyse the evolution of the wavefunction of a quantum particle propagating on several compact manifolds, including the Klein bottle, Möbius strip and projective plane. We find analytically the stationary states and the energy spectrum and show that the wavefunction exhibits perfect revivals. Using the orbifold structure of the discussed manifolds, we establish the relation of wave evolution on the manifolds to Fresnel diffraction and consequently to the Talbot effect. This connection provides a novel method of optical simulation of the quantum motion on compact manifolds. We discuss some novel phenomena as well as the effects of topology on the properties of the waves on the manifolds.

The general wavefunction for a particle under uniform force

F. Gori, Massimo Santarsiero, Riccardo Borghi +1 more

We present a simple approach for finding the general solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a particle moving under the action of a uniform force. From such a general solution we derive the eigenfunctions of the energy as well as those of the momentum. Next we obtain the propagator and show that the time evolution of an arbitrarily chosen initial wavefunction is described by a Fresnel transformation. This establishes a useful link with optical phenomena and allows us to link the case of a particle moving under a uniform force to that of the free particle.

The propagator for a particle in the presence of a one-dimensional square-well potential

J L Beeby

Abstract The propagator for a particle in the presence of a one-dimensional square-well potential is calculated. The related t-function is written down in Fourier transform. The analytic properties of the propagator and t-function are discussed.

Quantum mechanics and Talbot revivals on a tetrahedron

Jakub Bělín, S. A. R. Horsley, Tomáš Tyc

We analyze the propagation of waves on the surface of the simplest Platonic solid, the regular tetrahedron. We find that the time evolution of a quantum particle confined to such a surface is equivalent to the diffraction pattern from a certain grating profile and can therefore be investigated in a simple diffraction experiment. The quantum particle exhibits perfect quantum state revivals, which translate into the fractional Talbot effect in the diffraction pattern. We present the results of such an experiment and compare them with numerical simulations.
