Self-trapping and Macroscopic Tunnelling of Superfluid Fermi Gases in Multi-well Potentials

Abstract

We study the tunnelling dynamics of superfluid Fermi gases trapped in multi-well system along the BEC-BCS crossover. Within the hydrodynamical model and by using the multi-mode approximation, the self-trapping dynamics of superfluid Fermi gases in multi-well system are obtained numerically. We find that the self-trapping to diffusion transition strongly depends on the well number. When the well number is less than three, the self-trapped state takes place easier on the BEC side than that on the BCS side. However, when the well number is larger than three, the self-trapped state takes place easier on the BCS side instead of the BEC side. Furthermore, by considering a superfluid of 40 K atoms, we obtain the zero-mode and π-mode Josephson frequencies of coherent atomic oscillations in double-well system. It is noteworthy that the Josephson mode, especially, the existence of π-mode frequency strongly depends on the atoms number on the BCS side.

Tunneling and Self-Trapping of Superfluid Fermi Gases in BCS-BEC Crossover

Yu Long Zhou, Ying Wang, Wenchen Luo +1 more

We investigate tunneling and self-trapping of superfluid Fermi gases under a two-mode ansatz in different regimes of the crossover from Bardeen—Cooper—Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to Bose—Einstein condensates (BEC). Starting from a generalized equation of state, we derive the coupled equations of relative atom-pair number and relative phase about superfluid Fermi gases in a double-well system and then classify the different oscillation behaviors by the tunneling strength and interactions between atoms. Tunneling and self-trapping behaviors are considered in the whole BCS-BEC crossover in the case of a symmetric double-well potential. We show that the nonlinear interaction between atoms makes the self-trapping more easily realized in BCS regime than in the BEC regime and stability analysis is also given.

THE EFFECTS OF THE BEYOND MEAN FIELD CORRECTIONS OF FERMI SUPERFLUID GAS IN A DOUBLE-WELL POTENTIAL

Wen-Yuan Wang, Wen-Shan Duan, JIE LIU

By considering the contribution of the higher-order term representing the lowest approximation of beyond mean field corrections, we investigate a superfluid Fermi gas confined in a double-well potential in Bose–Einstein Condensation (BEC) side of the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) to BEC crossover. Two limited cases of deep BEC regime and BEC regime of BCS–BEC crossover, corresponding to the two-body scattering length a sc is small enough and large enough, respectively. We derive a simple two-mode model that could depict the dynamics effectively. With making thorough analysis on the two-mode model and its corresponding classical Hamiltonian, we find that the Josephson oscillation or self-trapping phenomenon could emerge at certain parameters. We find three kinds of the phase states: Josephson oscillation (JO), oscillating-phase-type self-trapping (OPTST) and running-phase-type self-trapping (RPTST). The dependence of these three phase states on the dimensionless interaction parameter y = 1/(kFa sc ) and the initial system energy are given in this paper.

Tunneling dynamics of superfluid Fermi gas in a triple-well potential

Xueqiang Gou, Hongjuan Meng, Wen-Yuan Wang +1 more

The tunneling dynamics of superfluid Fermi gas in a triple-well potential in the unitarity regime is investigated in the present paper. The fixed points of the (0,0) mode and the (π,π) mode are given. We find that the interaction parameter U and the coupling strength k could have an extreme effect on the quantum tunneling dynamics. We also find that, in the zero mode, only Josophson oscillation appears. However, for the π mode, the trapping phenomena take place. An irregular oscillation of the particle number in each well could appear by adjusting the scanning period T . It is noted that if the scanning period is less than a critical point T *, the particle number will come back to the fixed point with small oscillation, while if T > T * the particle number cannot come back to the fixed point, but with irregular oscillations. The dependence of the critical point T * on the system parameter of coupling strength k is numerically given.

Macroscopic periodic tunneling of Fermi atoms in the BCS-BEC crossover

Luca Salasnich, Nicola Manini, Flavio Toigo

We study the macroscopic quantum tunneling of two weakly linked superfluids made of interacting fermionic atoms. We derive atomic Josephson junction equations and find that zero-mode and $\ensuremath{\pi}$-mode frequencies of coherent atomic oscillations depend on the tunneling coefficient and the sound velocity of the superfluid. By considering a superfluid of $^{40}\text{K}$ atoms, we calculate these oscillation frequencies in the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state of weakly bound Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein condensate of strongly bound molecular dimers.

Josephson dynamics of strongly interacting superfluid Fermi gases in double-well potentials

Ji Li, Wen Wen, Yuke Zhang +1 more

In this work, we study the nonlinear Josephson dynamics of Fermi superfluids in the crossover from Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a double-well potential. Under a two-mode approximation, we derive a full two-mode (fTM) model including all interaction energy terms. By solving the fTM model numerically, we study the zero-phase and [Formula: see text]-phase modes of Josephson oscillations in the BCS–BEC crossover. We find that in the strongly interacting regime the cross interaction terms not appearing in the two-mode model cannot be easily ignored. The cross interactions can alter the behaviors of Josephson dynamics substantially, and interestingly the alterations for the zero-phase and [Formula: see text]-phase modes are just opposite.

Interaction-modulated tunneling dynamics of a mixture of Bose-Fermi superfluid

Hong-Ping Xu, Zhen-Zhen He, Zi-Fa Yu +1 more

In this paper, we study the interaction-modulated tunneling dynamics of a Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture, where a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with weak repulsive interaction is confined in a symmetric deep double-well potential and an equally populated two-component Fermi gas in a harmonic potential symmetrically is positioned in the center of the double-well potential. The tunneling between the two wells is modulated by fermions trapped in a harmonic potential. When the temperature is adequately low and the bosonic particle number is adequately large, we can employ the mean-field theory to describe the evolution of the BEC in the double-well potential through the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. For the Fermi gas in the harmonic potential trap, we consider the case where the inter-fermion interaction is tuned on the deep Bose-Einstein condensate of the inter-fermion Feshbach resonance, where two fermions of spin-up and spin-down form a two-body bound state. Within the regime, the Fermi gas is well described by a condensate of these fermionic dimers, and hence can be simulated as well by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation of dimers. The inter-species interactions couple the dynamics of the two species, which results in interesting features in the tunneling oscillations. The dynamic equations of the BEC in the double-well potential is described by a two-mode approximation. Coupling it with time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation of the harmonically potential trapped molecular BEC, we numerically investigate the dynamical evolution of the Boson-Fermi hybrid system under different initial conditions. It is found that the interaction among fermions in a harmonic potential leads to strong non-linearity in the oscillations of the bosons in the double-well potential and enriches the tunneling dynamics of the bosons. Especially, it strengthens macroscopic quantum self-trapping. And the macroscopic quantum self-trapping can be expressed in three forms: the phase tends to be negative and monotonically decreases with time, the phase evolves with time, and the phase tends to be positive and increases monotonically with time. This means that it is possible the tunneling dynamics of the BEC in double-well potential is adjustable. Our results can be verified experimentally in a Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture by varying different interaction parameters via Feshbach resonance and confinement-induced resonance.
