Integral bounds for radar ambiguity functions and Wigner distributions

Élliott H. Lieb

Abstract

An upper bound is proved for the Lp norm of Woodward’s ambiguity function in radar signal analysis and of the Wigner distribution in quantum mechanics when p>2. A lower bound is proved for 1≤p<2. In addition, a lower bound is proved for the entropy. These bounds set limits to the sharpness of the peaking of the ambiguity function or Wigner distribution. The bounds are best possible and equality is achieved in the Lp bounds if and only if the functions f and g that enter the definition are both Gaussians.

Weighted Norms of Ambiguity Functions and Wigner Distributions

Peter Jung

In this article new bounds on weighted p-norms of ambiguity functions and Wigner functions are derived. Such norms occur frequently in several areas of physics and engineering. In pulse optimization for Weyl-Heisenberg signaling in wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering channels for example it is a key step to find the optimal waveforms for a given scattering statistics which is a problem also well known in radar and sonar waveform optimizations. The same situation arises in quantum information processing and optical communication when optimizing pure quantum states for communicating in bosonic quantum channels, i.e. find optimal channel input states maximizing the pure state channel fidelity. Due to the non-convex nature of this problem the optimum and the maximizers itself are in general difficult find, numerically and analytically. Therefore upper bounds on the achievable performance are important which will be provided by this contribution. Based on a result due to E. Lieb, the main theorem status a new upper bound which is independent of the waveforms and becomes tight only for Gaussian weights and waveforms. A discussion of this particular important case, which tighten recent results on Gaussian quantum fidelity and coherent states, will be given. Another bound is presented for the case where scattering is determined only by some arbitrary region in phase space

A refinement of the RobertsonSchrodinger uncertainty principle and a Hirschman-Shannon inequality for Wigner distributions

Nuno. C.Dias, M. de Grosson, João. N.Prata

We propose a refinement of the Robertson–Schrödinger uncertainty principle (RSUP) using Wigner distributions. This new principle is stronger than the RSUP. In particular, and unlike the RSUP, which can be saturated by many phase space functions, the refined RSUP can be saturated by pure Gaussian Wigner functions only. Moreover, the new principle is technically as simple as the standard RSUP. In addition, it makes a direct connection with modern harmonic analysis, since it involves the Wigner transform and its symplectic Fourier transform, which is the radar ambiguity function. As a by-product of the refined RSUP, we derive inequalities involving the entropy and the covariance matrix of Wigner distributions. These inequalities refine the Shanon and the Hirschman inequalities for the Wigner distribution of a mixed quantum state . We prove sharp estimates which critically depend on the purity of and which are saturated in the Gaussian case.

On a Recent Conjecture by Z. Van Herstraeten and N. J. Cerf for the Quantum Wigner Entropy

Nuno Costa Dias, João Nuno Prata

Abstract We address a recent conjecture stated by Z. Van Herstraeten and N. J. Cerf. They claim that the Shannon entropy for positive Wigner functions is bounded below by a positive constant, which can be attained only by Gaussian pure states. We introduce an alternative definition of entropy for all absolutely integrable Wigner functions, which is the Shannon entropy for positive Wigner functions. Moreover, we are able to prove, in arbitrary dimension, that this entropy is indeed bounded below by a positive constant, which is not very distant from the constant suggested by Van Herstraeten and Cerf. We also prove an analogous result for another conjecture stated by the same authors for the Rényi entropy of positive Wigner functions. As a by-product we prove a new inequality for the radar-ambiguity function (and for the Wigner distribution) which is reminiscent of Lieb’s inequalities.

Upper bounds on the purity of Wigner positive quantum states that verify the Wigner entropy conjecture

Qipeng Qian, Christos Gagatsos

We present analytical results toward the Wigner entropy conjecture, which posits that among all physical Wigner non-negative states the Wigner entropy is minimized by pure Gaussian states for which it attains the value $1+\lnπ$. Working under a minimal set of constraints on the Wigner function, namely, non-negativity, normalization, and the pointwise bound $πW\le 1$, we construct an explicit hierarchy of lower bounds $B_n$ on $S[W]$ by combining a truncated series lower bound for $-\ln x$ with moment identities of the Wigner function. This yields closed-form sufficient conditions, expressed in terms of the state purity $μ:=\operatorname{Tr}(ρ^2)=2π\int dq\,dp\,W(q,p)^2$, ensuring $S[W]\ge 1+\lnπ$. In particular, we first prove that all physical Wigner-non-negative states with $μ\le 4-2\sqrt{3}$ satisfy the Wigner entropy conjecture. We further obtain a systematic purity-only relaxation of the hierarchy, whose limiting sufficient condition is $μ\le 2/e$. Finally, we show that the threshold $2/e$ is sharp under the relaxed constraints considered here, thereby identifying the need for additional quantum-realizability information in the remaining high-purity regime.

We present analytical results toward the Wigner entropy conjecture, which posits that among all physical Wigner non-negative states the Wigner entropy is minimized by pure Gaussian states for which it attains the value 1+ln⁡π1+\lnπ1+lnπ. Working under a minimal set of constraints on the Wigner function, namely, non-negativity, normalization, and the pointwise bound πW≤1πW\le 1πW≤1, we construct an explicit hierarchy of lower bounds BnB_nBn on S[W]S[W]S[W] by combining a truncated series lower bound for −ln⁡x-\ln x−lnx with moment identities of the Wigner function. This yields closed-form sufficient conditions, expressed in terms of the state purity μ:=Tr⁡(ρ2)=2π∫dq dp W(q,p)2μ:=\operatorname{Tr}(ρ^2)=2π\int dq\,dp\,W(q,p)^2μ:=Tr(ρ2)=2π∫dqdpW(q,p)2, ensuring S[W]≥1+ln⁡πS[W]\ge 1+\lnπS[W]≥1+lnπ. In particular, we first prove that all physical Wigner-non-negative states with μ≤4−23μ\le 4-2\sqrt{3}μ≤4−23 satisfy the Wigner entropy conjecture. We further obtain a systematic purity-only relaxation of the hierarchy, whose limiting sufficient condition is μ≤2/eμ\le 2/eμ≤2/e. Finally, we show that the threshold 2/e2/e2/e is sharp under the relaxed constraints considered here, thereby identifying the need for additional quantum-realizability information in the remaining high-purity regime.
