Coherence Effects in Cold Cesium Atoms

Abstract

We have studied a ladder and a Λ system on cold Cesium atoms released from a magneto optical trap. Probe absorption spectra have been satisfactorily interpreted in terms of a non degenerate three level model at low pump power. At higher power a sum of non interacting three level systems is adequate to predict line positions. An experimental test for a sum rule in nonlinear optics is presented and a novel type of dark trap that relies on electromagnetically induced transparency for a velocity selective storage in the dark state is demonstrated.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in cold free atoms: Test of a sum rule for nonlinear optics

F. S. Cataliotti, C. Fort, Theodor W. Hänsch +2 more

The resonance absorption line shape from cold $(T<100$ $\ensuremath{\mu}$K) atomic cesium vapor has been investigated with a probe laser after switching off the magneto-optical trapping fields. An additional nonabsorbed laser field has been used to produce quantum interference in a three-level ladder scheme. Predicted but counterintuitive modifications of the natural absorption line shape have been directly observed including inhibition of resonance absorption. The validity of a nonlinear sum rule deduced from the causality principle has been satisfactorily tested.

Absorption spectroscopy of cold caesium atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap

闫树斌 Yan Shubin, Tao Liu, Tao Geng +3 more

Absorption spectra of cold caesium atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap are measured around D 2 line at 852nm with a weak probe beam. Absorption reduction dip due to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect induced by the cooling/trapping field in a V-type three-level system and a gain peak near the cycling transition are clearly observed. Several mechanisms mixed with EIT effect in a normal V-type three-level system are briefly discussed. A simple theoretical analysis based on a dressed-state model is presented for interpretation of the absorption spectra.

Full resolution of the Autler–Townes Zeeman multiplet for cold cesium atoms in three-level Α-type configuration

F. S. Cataliotti, C. Fort, M. Prevedelli +1 more

Cold cesium atoms released from a magneto-optical trap were investigated in Lambda-type configurations of hyperfine levels of the D-2 line. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) was observed and studied as a function of relevant parameters of the pump-probe lasers. Full resolution of the Zeeman degeneracy was obtained for the first time through the different dependence of the Autler-Townes effect.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in cold rubidium atoms

Min Yan, Edward G. Rickey, Yifu Zhu

We report experimental studies of electromagnetically induced transparency in Λ-type and ladder-type atomic systems realized in 87Rb atoms cooled and confined in a magneto-optical trap. Complete transparency is observed in the Λ-type system with a moderate coupling field. Comparison between the two systems reveals that at the line center of a weak probe transition, destructive interference occurs for the Λ-type system, whereas constructive interference occurs for the ladder-type system. We discuss conditions of complete transparency in the Λ-type system that contains hyperfine magnetic sublevels. Our experimental measurements for the two systems agree with theoretical calculations based on simple three-level Λ-type and ladder-type models.

Observation of the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Dispersion-like Structure in Trapped Cs Atoms

Kyoung-Dae Kim, Mi-Rang Kwon, Jung Bog Kim +1 more

We report experiemtnal results demonstrating the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in trapped Cs atoms. EIT occurs at the Λ-type configuration where the re0-pumping laser simultaneously plays a role as the coupling laser in the presence of a magneto-optical trapping and weak magnetic fields. Dependences of EIT signal on both the intensity and the detuning of the coupling laser were investigated. Linear absorption spectra for cold cesium atoms in the magneto-optical trap have been observed and shown the pronounced dispersion-like structure with sub-natural linewidth of 1 MHz due to the cooling laser.

Temperature-selective trapping of atoms in a dark state by means of quantum interference

C. Fort, F. S. Cataliotti, M. Prevedelli +1 more

We present a novel type of dark spontaneous-force optical trap. The trap is based on a velocity-selective inhibition of repumping light absorption produced by electromagnetically induced transparency. Accumulation of cold cesium atoms in a dark state is observed.
