Demonstration of Berry's Phase Using Stored Ultracold Neutrons

Abstract

Using stored spin-polarized ultracold neutrons subjected to a temporally varying magnetic field, we have demonstrated a manifestation of Berry's phase. We verified several properties of Berry's phase which include its solid-angle dependency and additivity for multiple excursions along the same path in parameter space.

THE NON-CYCLIC BERRY PHASE

Harald Weinfurter, G. Badurek

By analyzing the change of the polarization of a thermal neutron beam on its passage through a magnetic field rotating at various speeds, it is demonstrated that geometric phase shifts of quantum states first introduced by Berry can be observed also for non-cyclic incomplete evolutions in parameter space.

The neutron Berry phase

V. K. Ignatovich

The neutron Berry phase is found from an exact analytic solution of the Schrödinger equation in a constant magnetic field and a perpendicular radiofrequency field rotating with an angular frequency . The solution is found for arbitrary values of , , and . The Berry phase is shown to be a linear approximation of the exact value in the parameter when this parameter is small.

The Berry phase: A simple derivation and relation to the electric dipole moment experiments with ultracold neutrons

V. K. Ignatovich

I derive the effective phase of the spin precession for a neutral particle with spin 1∕2 moving in a superposition of constant and radio frequency fields. The fields are perpendicular to each other at all times, and the radio frequency field is slowly rotating with angular speed ω. The derivation is accomplished with the help of the exact solution of the Schrödinger equation. I show that the geometrical (or Berry) phase is the linear term in the power series expansion of the effective phase in terms of ω. I also discuss the role of the Berry phase in the experimental search for an electric dipole moment of the neutron with ultracold neutrons.

Geometrical phase effects in neutron optics

The aim of this paper is to study in detail the geometric phase (Berry phase) and to discuss peculiarities of its measurements in the most typical physical case, i.e., the problem of neutron spin evolution in a precessing magnetic field.

Neutron Interferometric Observation of Noncyclic Phase

Apoorva G. Wagh, Veer Chand Rakhecha, Peter Fischer +1 more

Using polarized neutrons, we have determined phases as well as interference amplitudes for noncyclic spinor evolutions in static magnetic fields. Both these quantities depend on the angle subtended by the neutron spin with the field. This experiment elucidates the subtle, and widely misunderstood, concepts involved.

Neutron-gravity interferometry experiment: testing Earth's rotating frequency fluctuations via neutron Berry's phases due to spin-rotation couplings

Shen, Jian-Qi

Neutron spin can be coupled to the Earth's rotating frequency. Once if the Earth's rotating frequency is time-dependent, then the neutron will acquire a Berry's topological phase (cyclic adiabatic geometric phase). So, a potential method to investigate the Earth's time-varying rotating frequency by measuring the phase difference between geometric phases of neutron spin polarized vertically down and up is proposed.
