Abstract

The Mandelstam-Tamm time-energy inequality is exploited to obtain a transparent expression of the lifetime-energy uncertainty relation for decaying quantum systems along with some useful features of the quantum non-decay probability.

Critical Look at the Time--Energy Uncertainty Relations

K. Urbanowski

The Heisenberg and Mandelstam-Tamm time-energy uncertainty relations are analyzed. The conlusion resulting from this analysis is that within the Quantum Mechanics of Schrödinger and von Neumann, the status of these relations can not be considered as the same as the status of the position-momentum uncertainty relations, which are rigorous. The conclusion is that the time--energy uncertainty relations can not be considered as universally valid.

Comment on "Energy-time uncertainty relation for driven quantum systems" and "Quantum Speed Limit for Non-Markovian Dynamics"

Manaka Okuyama, Takahashi Ryo, Masayuki Ohzeki

Deffner and Lutz [J. Phys. A 46, 335302 (2013) and Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 010402 (2013).] extended the Mandelstam-Tamm bound and the Margolus-Levitin bound to time-dependent and non-Markovian systems, respectively. Although the derivation of the Mandelstam-Tamm bound is correct, we point out that thier analysis of the Margolus-Levitin bound is incorrect. The Margolus-Levitin bound has not yet been established in time-dependent quantum systems, except for the adiabatic case.

On the lifetime-width relation for a decaying state and the uncertainty principle

M. Bauer, Pier A. Mello

A new formulation of the uncertainty relation of position and momentum, and of energy and time, is presented. The connection between the lifetime of excited states and the energy width of these states, which does not follow from the usual uncertainty relation, is shown to be a consequence of the expression here derived.

On the lifetime-width relation for a decaying state and the uncertainty principle (decay law/line shape/characteristic time/equivalent width/time coherence)

Improvement of the Eberly-Singh time-energy inequality by combination with the Mandelstam-Tamm approach

C. Leubner, Christoph Alexander Kiener

It is demonstrated that Eberly and Singh's notion of partial stationarity of a quantum system can be reconciled with Mandelstam and Tamm's approach to deriving energy-time inequalities. The result of this merger is an improved stationarity time, which provides a more precise measure of the degree of stationarity of the system under study, and which permits a sharper statement of the energy-time uncertainty relation than that given by Eberly and Singh.
